BATES COUNTY. SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS. By County Saperintendent P.M. Allison. ‘The firat.school visited Inst week was Passaic, The teacher and pupils were doing very good work and seemed determined to succeed and we are quite sure they will, Mrs. McDowel, the teacher, Is a former Kansas teacher and has been used to grade work, Miss Ethel Dark, one of the eighth year pupila, will attend achool in Rich Hill next year. At Mt. Zion, in Mound township, Mra. Bettio Crowder Is teacher and it is not necessary to say that the school is doing well for Mra, Crowder does not teach any other kind, They have avery lntereoting class of ninth year pupila, All pupils are doing well, At Adrian two rooms were visited they having not been visited before for lack of time, The. room under the care of Mist Lora Woods is doing most excellent work and the pupils of thia room are to do some special work when we visit thom again, The other room viaited was in charge of Mias Lucy Dowel who is one the boat instructors of the county, — Miss Dowel holds the attention and keeps up the Interest of her pupils from the boginnings to the close of her recita- thon ducting the clase in Pedagogy for Prof, Hoover and we must say that thie id an exceptionally bright class of young men and young ladies, Miss Jessie Mawaon, the teacher at Clay Hill gehoot in Deer Creek town: ahip, has her pupils doing fine work and teacher and pupila are alike in terested in thelr work, Ruth MeClar- on, Albert Sulling, Georgia Steven aon, Pearl Sulling, Leo Westoff, Ne' lie Phillips, Cart Weatoff, Herboi Phillips, Eleie Sulling, Ray Philliss, Mabel Rruner and Ethel Sulling have each sont in all work left and each one has their work correct, These pupils are as willing workers as one need want to see, Mias Flossie MeRoberts ts teaching Crescent Hil school and is at present interested in spending the proceeds of a very successful ite supper given by her aehool, Miss MeRoberts: is teaching a very suecesstul term, Her pupils are interested and doing good work and have sent lathe work lett but some of them failed to give their names, Over at Red White and Blue they ave really anxious to work and they know how to work, We left some } work for this sehool to do and it had) not been neglected. Those sending in work from this school are, Rannie Frisbie, Amelia Gebhart and Harry Ficklin, Miss Della Stephenson ts teaching the school and has her work well organized and finds but litle trouble in following the course of) atudy, She had some regular class | work done by her pupils which is as | guod as any we have seen, At Mingo achool, in Grand River township, they have the langest en- rollment of any country school in the county, In the "A" Geography class, they have seventeen pupils and when | they are called to recite it looks very much like all the pupils are in this class but by looking over the room itis plain enough that the class is) none too lange, Such classes require considerable skill on the part of the | teacher to keep up an interest and We had the pleasure of cone} have another Henry county teacher, Miss Bertha Angle, but she believes in using a course of and patiiog it into use in her work thus making her work as systematic as possible. Mias Angle has her. school well clas- sified and is doing some very fine work in Practical Agriculture. Supt. Lamkin of Henry county is going to visit this school soon and has asked me to meet him there. The invita- tion will be accepted and other schools in the county visited after which we will spend a day in Henry county visiting schools. Fair View school, in Spruce town- ship, has some pupils that can spell, Iva Hurt and Ona Thomas of this achool are the cay pupils that have apelled all of the list of words used for the last two weeks, Others have spelled all but one or two of the words We did more teaching in this school than all other schools put together and for myself must sa: that T really enjoyed it, but the pupils may feel very differently about it, Miss Redford is teaching the school and has-a very interesting school. The Enterprise school was in ses- sion this time and doing good work, This was the third attempt to visit this school the other times the school was tot in session, Prof, J, C, Maxey is teacher and has his school under ‘ood control and taking good interest in the work, Shelton is moving along as though nothing had ever happened. and all are interested in the work, It is. re- ported that Mrs, Rodgers is much improved in health and they think will give no more trouble, This poheot won second prize in the school exhibit contest and they are going to yet a dictionary with the proceeds. liss Lydia Beaman is teaching the achool and is satisfying all concerned, At Johnstown they were preparing to clean house and not in the very beat conditions to be visited, How. ever, they were engaged in a good cause and went at their work ina way that showed they know how to | clean house as well as. study and | their work they had to shaw me} eres that they know how to study, ‘heir house cleaning can not be com- mended too highly, Tt is necessary for good health besides the impres- sion for good ithas on the pupils, Misa Lulu Beaman is teaching the school and is doing fine work for her | boant and patrons, | The teacher's meeting for Johns: | town was postponed on account of | the weather, Johnstown has_ the | reputation of being al ‘dry town’ | yut it was anything. else Saturday, The meeting will be held at some fu- ture time perhaps when the State} Supt. visits us, The spelliig contest to be held the | sth of this month ean not very well be put off and it is sugyested that the | contestants come so as to be here) by noon that day, It is hoped that every township will be represented | at this meeting. | Along the Miami. j Carl Jones visited this neighbor: | hood with his supply wagon Thurs: | day. j Miss Mildred Lillibridge has been | ill for several days. We hope for her i speedy recovery, j Joe and Roy Geer are not well | manage them sucoessfully, but Miss — stay the teacher, a a very decided success © ork, Some of the —_ ~ school are preparing teachers examination in March, Down at Prairie City after the con- testants for the County Spelling Con- test had been selected . had an old time oe =e 4 j a 3 ii fl a 4 Hi ib : E iy 54 F4zt ¥ g z 5 i j g g : Z f alte rt x ti th 3 Hs Hi fg & enough to attend school, Louis Fisher attended the Wood- man lodge Thursday night.
