Lincoln Marriage Bond Found. Fulton, Mo., Feb —When Robert Lincoln, the father of Abrabam Lin- coln, was married to Nancy Hanks in Washington county, Kentucky, the father of Captain Robert M. Ber ry, of Willlamsburg, in this county, was one of the signers of the mar Mage bond, and a copy of the docu ment {s among the Captain’s papers at his home, while the origtnal is {pn the records of the Kentucky county. It was a law in Kentucky in those days for the bridegroom to guar @ntee proper support and matnten ance of the wife by giving bond, and Mr. Berry guaranteed to donat about $250 in caee Robert Lincoly failed to provide for Nuncy Hanks. Captain Berry, who is now 94 years old, is well informed on the early history of the Lincoln family and knows many incidents {n the bey life of the martyred President. Former Bates County Boy. The Appleton City Journal last week published a most excellent like- ness of Ed. A. Hook, proprietor of the Appleton City Telephone ex- change, together with his biography, as a successful business man of that town. Ed. Hook isa Bates county product, son of the late J. E. Hook of Hudson township, anda brother of J. Emmett Hook. He married a daughter of the late Judge Fred Fix The Journal says: “Prior to en- goaing in the telephone business Mr. ook with credit to himself and great satisfaction to the people dis- charged the duties of Circuit Clerk at the county seat four years; served two years as alderman from his ward in the elty council of Appleton City; {s now president of the Commercial club; secretary for a number of years of the Masonic lodge at this place and one of the directors of the new Academy associattén. He is also a prominent member of a very widely noted and exceedingly popular ant- a sribe at Clinton, known as the 8. Does the BabyThrive If not, something must be wrong with its food. It COLONEL DENNING TO COLONEL MORRISON. | | Invites fhe Prodigal’s Return to Land of Plenty. Burer, Mo., Fes. 8, 1909. Epiror or THE Times: In answer to a letter that I see in your paper of recent date which Chas. Morrison | wrote criticising what I said about New Mexico, in particular Mountalno- air, the locality in which Mr. Morrt- son {s located. I was there about a month ago and drove out to Mr. Morrison's place. I have been acquainted with Mr. Morrison for thirty years He asked me what I thought of the country. I told him I did not think much of ft; did pot seem to agree with his views, for he was in the real estate business, He asked mo to give him my objections to shat place. The first thing, your soil ts no «ood; and the next thing you farm ers are all hauling water from one mile to ten miles for your stock and house uee, from a well which the raii road uses to get water for its en- jwines, which I understood was be- tween three and four hundred feet deep. Mr, Morrison says they ralee clover, timothy, alfalfa, potatoes, |pumpkins, cabbage, corn, wheat and | oats in that locality, while | did not see any of that stuff in a twenty mile drive, excepting a few small potatoes end a few pumpkins, I saw some jeorn in thesack which was shipped {trom Bates Co, Missourt, was all the corn | saw, I saw a car load of tn ovby hay which was worth $18 00 a ton, which the man sald came from | Kyusas, I don’t think there ts grase enough grows on one hundred ucree to feed one cow. Mr. Morrison says when that country gets developed {t will be all right, I don’t think its very new, for there fs Albuquerque only seventy miles from Mountatn- alr, which {s over three hundred years old, where men can take alt the government land they want wishin aight of the town, When farmers have to dig from one hundred to five hundred fees for water I don’t think much of ft. Mr. Morrison though I was loco. ed, bus I don’s think there is any danger of a man being locoed in New Mexico, forl think the land is too poor to grow loco, but 1 does ratse rattle snakes and gila monsters and sarantulas and fleas. I think Mr. Morrison would like to boom the country and have people to come down there so he could locate them. Mr. Morrison says he has known me for @ number of years and says my reputation for truth and varacity was never questioned. It seems to me since Mr. Morrison has gone to New Mexico he has gone a little daffy, for now he doubss my word. He called me Colonel Denning, where it was Only necessary to call me Pete. Any one who {a thinking of locating {n New Mexico had better go and see {s. If {t isn’t as I have stated it and worse, I will set up the dinners. Now Idon’t think Bates county is the only place. I saw places on my trip more desirable than Bates county (but {6 was not in New Mexico) but land was from $100 to $500an acre, say nothing about en orchard, with an orchard worth from $1,000 to $5,000 an acre. I think anybody that would leave Bates Co., where the soil {s good and plenty of water. coal, wood, market, schools and churches all over the county and go to New Mexico, I think they have made a bad mistake. Thisis Pete’s view of the matter. IfI were in the real estate business in New Mexico I suppose I would talk different and I think that is the reason Bro. Morrt- son talks the way he does. Bro. Morrison fe like the prodigalson. He left the land of plenty to eat and to spare and went to New Mexico to feast on stubby cedars without any water. But if he wants to come back to good old Bates we will give him the right hand of fellowship. Perer Dexnine. Gentle Advice to Autoists. Ifthe same amount of efforts ‘| | pended on the horn to get people to move out of your way were used to move the steering wheel slightly so as not to seem to bear directly upon the person {n front, and if youshould steer around wagons in the road, as! nine ¢imes out of ten you must do in! the end, rather than blow and blow! the horn in vain effort to get them | to move, much less friction would be! caused and the speed increased. I think {¢ is much better to pase care- fully and as quietly as ble. poe ph igs are no! : be ; atall, and you can generally tell if warning {e neceesary.—Augustus Post in The Outing Magazine for February.
