Mrs. William McRoberts, Waverly, Minn., writes: “Iam perfectly well of the catarrh, I took Peruna and Manalin, ivend your medicine to every one and cannot praise it enough, It is a fine medicine to take any season of the year. Taken in the spring it tones up the! system and acts as a gentle stimulant.” A Good Tonic. Mr. Joe Leonard, Flat 3, 282 Allen St., Buffalo, N. Y., wriies: “1 have good reason to endorse Peruna as I have found it a good tonic, stimu- lating the system and under great pressure, usual endurance and cnall me to work much longer and harder than the system could possibly do were it not for the great powers with which it en- dowed me, It gives one nerves of iron.” Two Counties Without Jails. Topeka, May + —That the county jails in Kansas have not been in- spected by the judge of the district court and the county attorney as re- quired by law is shown in thereports recelved by Governor Hoch from the county clerks. The governor sent! Ruta letter April 23 asking about thé inspections and tke date of the last one. He has recetved seventy replies. -Forty-eix county clerks say that the jails in their counties have never been inspected since the jail| bound tobe interwoven when the, was bullt. Twenty-two county clerks say that the jails are being inspected and the date of the last one is given. About half the dates show that the inspections are made after the gov- ernor’s letter was sent out. Steffurd and Grant counties have no jails and Kingman county has not had a prisoner for two years. The county clerks insist that the jails are just as good as any in the state. In Nees county the jail was condemned a year ago as unsanitary and unsafe, but no effort has been made torepatir it and it 1s being used. The governor believes that the jails flould be improved. A Mayor Who “Played Politics”’ For the City’s Good. From the Philadelphia North American; Tom Johnson has “played politics” with the Cleveland street car prob lem beyond all doubt. Let that slur ‘of his critics be granted. But let {t | be remembered that legitimate busi ness and lecitimate politics are ; business is that of public service. | This fighting man, after seven | years of defeat, stands to-day victor |with the shattered fragments ofa jmonopoly under his feet. He did | nos win by kid-glove and rosewater jmethods. He was compelled to be- | come a politician. To capsure the ‘elsy he needed a machine. He made it. To establish his principles he had to wade in the mire of petty po- litical scheming. The means matter- ed not. He was working to an end. The winner of a victory absolutely unique {n civic history comes out of the struggle no saint, but a great man among men, whose handiwork will be watched henceforth with the deepest interest by students of gov- ernment wherever municipal govern- ment is the most pressing problem, which {fe to say in every civilized land on earth. Lsut die advised my Senator Stone Bides His Time. Washington, May 4—Senator Stone, of Missouri, will leave Wash ington about May 15, and will not complete his plans for his campaign against Governor Folk before that time. Senator Stone’s present expectation is that he will not make his opening campaign speech until well along in June. He will attend the State Convention for the election of delegatés to the Denver Conven- tion. It 1s probable that bis speaking schedule will be arranged after con ference with his political friends at and subsequent to the meeting of the State Convention. His original pur- | pose was to remain in Washington j until after the adjournment of Con- | &ress, as it seemed until now that an | adjournment would be reached by the middle of May. Senator Stone read with much tn- terest the opening speech of Gov. Folk at St. Joseph, but has not made any comments on it for publication. Although he is taking his time about opening hostilities, there is much evidence about his office in the Malt- by building, indicating that “Bill” Stone will not lose his reputation as an active proposition in politics. Ifanything interferes with diges- A catarrhal condition of the stomach prevents perfect digestion. Such a condition allows the food to ferment and decompose in various ways, instead of digesting. The blood is thus contaminated with various materials that do not belong in the blood. * This gives rise to spring fever, eruptions on the Peruna corrects all these difficulties by striking at the source of them. By eradicating the ca- tarrhal condition of the stomach Peruna at once restores digestion, the blood is thereby purified, and the whole machinery of the body is put in working order. Peruna has probably made a more remarkable record in cases of catarrh of the stomach than any otner medicine, These cases are very frequent, and we have a host of testimonials in which Peruna has received lavish praise for prompt and permanent relief in cases of catarrh of the stomach ~~ oO eee" ; Mr. William Hoge, President (¢ Broadway, New York, N.Y. writes: “Lendorse Peruna as the most able tovtud in my travels in this country or } 1 have spent thousands of do} in this count trying to find a cure, and it Was not until b wes it cd to give Peru I that | obtained any~ satonicitis simply great, Itoughtto bein the grip of every commere Wet al trav as mys avenot had the hte Ina never with ; thing like permanent relief.
