Chicago, July 9—The round-up of casualties due to an “insane” cele- bration of Independence Day shows 51-dead and 3551 injured. The loss of life almost equals that of last year, when 59 persons were killed. Every record for the number injured was broken. Last year 42 persons were killed outright, but when lockjaw and other diseases induced by injuries had completed their work over 400 lives had been sacrificed. The nur ber of injured is {n excess of last year’s figures by 1109. The center.of slaughter was, as usual, Philadelphia, where 711 patri- ote and innocent bystanders were victims. The toy pistol was uausu- ally destructive. Chicago was the second center of injury, two children being killed and 157 persons more or leas injured. In New York sanity ruled to a certain extent, 65 injuries being reported, with two deaths. Toledo was an example of what rigorous enforcement of law and the education of Ite citizens can accom- plish. For days Mayor Whitlock preached sanity, and the result was that only two persons were injured, one of them being in a runaway. That the death list will continue Washington, July 9 —Ex-Senator Secretary, on the situation in Egypt An interesting debate on foreign af- fairs had been anticipated when the House of Commons took up the for- eign estimates, but on account of Russia and the Congo, rather than Egypt. Other subjects, however, were temporarily shelved when the house realized the momentous character of Str Edward Grey’s deliverance with regard to Egypt. Speaking in @ solemn tone, and amid a tense silence, the Minister de- clared that the recent attacks on British officers at Tantab were not accidental, but a delberate manifest- ation of the fanatical spirit which had necessitated the strengthening of the garrison in Egypt, and declared that unless the authority of Lord Gromer and the Egyptian Govern- ment is strongly upheld, it might lead to a situation requiring the} «What did it taste like?” adoption of sterner measures. “Do-no.” The Secretary said: “What did you call for?” “As things are now, I say deliber-| « «something on ice.’ ” ately, and with a full senseofrespon-| «What did you get?” sibility, that if Parliment does any-| « ‘gomething on tee.’ ” thing at this moment to weaken or} «What did Jim call it?” destroy the authority of the Egypt-} «tjno.’” fan Government you will have come “Beg pardon; I don’t. The only difference {s, when I drink ‘uno’ I want some more and when I drink soda, ale and well water I don’t.” Some ten other witnesses for the State were equally luminous. The defense offered a certificate {ssued by the brewing company which sold ‘uno.’ The document stated that ‘uno’ passed Federal inspection in the Indian Territory, and was harm- leas when applied to Indians. Coun- eel argued the case until the moon came peeping through the trees. The jury brought in a verdict of “Don’t know,” which let the “uno” man out on that case, but there are ten more cases ahead of him. “It’s all-fired funny,” muttered the prosecutor, as he climbed into his keeps his place open on that day. The governor declares that he does not believe the opinion means the saloons there are to be permitted to rell liquor on Sunday, he seeing in it slmply the construction of the city charter, which gives to St. Joseph the right to regulate the saloons free from interference on the part of the county authoritigs. It is the gover- nor’s judgment that the court of ap- peals, in the opinion in question, means that the St. Joseph saloons can be regulated by that city in any manner that it may see fitso long as these regulations do not confilct with state laws. He thinks that the council there, in the light of the opinion, may designate the hour at which saloons shall close at night, and other matters of a kindred ma- ture, but he does not believe the opinion susceptible of the construc- tion that the saloons may run on Sunday, under the Andriano ordi- severely punctured by a plece of shell that the optic nerve has been removed.
