Washington June.—Representa- tive Robert Adame of the Second congressional district of Pennsyl- vania, died at 11:30 o’clock Friday in the emergency hospital in thiscity, {as the result of pistol shot fired through his mouth into his head with euicidal {utent. The act was comuitted at the club chambers of the Metropolitan club, where Mr. Adams had resided forseveral years, some time between 6 and 7 o'clock this morning. Is was not antil8 o'clock, how- ever, that Mr. Adams was found by Horace Clark, one of the negro bell- men. Upon opening the door, Clark found Mr. Adams, entirely nude, ait- ting uprightin anarm chair. Mr. Adams was then unconsciousness and the physician who was sum- moned pronounced the wound fatal. Mr. Adams wrote the following letter to Speaker Cannon. It was received at the capitol just before the House convened: “HonorableJ.G.Cannon. The Benzine Treatment Found Efficacious to the Heavy Variety. Cherryvale, Kas., May.—Benzineis being used in some parts of the Kan- sas fleld, where the oil 1s heavy, to cut the accumulation of sand from the bottom of the hole and increase the flow of the well. As everybody knows, an oil well decreases in ca- pacity with age, and some of the wells in the heavy ofl districts of Kansas have decreased from twenty Barrels, two or three years ago, to jes than five barrels. A short time ago & stranger from Pennsylvania was watching the pumping of a well in Humboldt. He asked some questions as to how much the well had made when It was first drilled, and then he saldin an off-hand way. “Why don’t you fellows put two or three barrels of benalne in the bottom of that well, eat away the sand and other stuff which has ac- cumulated and then you will have more oil.” The men at the well thought he was joking, but finally decided to try theexperiment. The result was that the production of the well was » increased from three to more than ten barrels daily. And the well is still in good condition. @ther ofl men around Humboldt are begin- ning to try the “benzinetreatment,” rend it has been found successful © wherever tried. ‘¢ © But the producers of light ol! need “not try it. Thesand dose not pile up inthe eame way and does not form the same kind of a heavy, gommy etuff which gets together in the heavy ofl wells and prevent the To Sell the Salmon Houses, Ciinton, Mo., Jane.—Judge Piiilips has authorized Receiver Dantel of the Bank of Salmon & Salmon to eell at auction in Clinton, September 30, all the realty assets of the bank. Washington, June.—It was decld- ed by the statehood conferees this morulng to fix the capital for the new atete of Oklahoma at Guthrie until 1915. No agreement was reached on the New Mexico and Ari- sova provisions, The action of the couterees regarding Guthrie will meet with hitter opposition in the Senate. A mujority of the senators believe that the new state should be permit- ted to determine {na shorter time than ulne years where the capital should be located and that the legts- ‘ation proposed {s equivalent to fix- ing permanently thecapttal location. 1b was stated by one of the con- ferees this morning that no report would be ready for submission for several days. This means that the House machine has made a recount of Senate votes and that Speaker Cannon {s convinced that he will have to get more votes on the Sen- ate side before he can feel assured that his face in real fact {s saved. If the Senate tacks on the statehood bill as & “rider” and {t passes in that form the people of Oklahoma can determine at once where their state capital ts to be located. Guthrie is popular with the House machine be- cause its representatives wanted the Senate bill sent to conference. Has Stood The Test 25 Years. The old, original GROVE’S Taste- less chill tonic. Coombs, has been placed by the Omaha courtsin the dilewma of not being able to claim his property, awarded by the Judge, except at the risk of killing a woman. In this instance the pound of flesh is a $300 diamond inthe appendix of & self-confessed shoplitter. Mae Thomas swallowed tho dia- mond Saturday in the retail store of T. L. Coombs & Co., jewelers. From a tray of diamonds on the counter the woman selzed the handsomest stone and concealed it in her mouth. To avoid being found with the dia- mond on her person when searched, she swallowed it. Fearing appendicitis, the Thomas woman confessed this to the police, who confirmed the story by taking an X-ray photograph. “The diamond is yonrs,” sald the police Judge to the jeweler yesterday. “Take it, but if you resort to an operation against the prisoner’s will, and she dies, you can be held for murder.” The surgeons say the diamond cannot be recovered without an operation, as the X-ray showed it to be lodged in the intestine. About the only chance Coombs has of recovering his $300 diamond is that the Thomas woman will de- velope an attack of appendicitis. Symptoms have already been noted. His Skull Separates.
