y SS ae Thin Necks and Also Persist easy | A practical liticlan of the first oe SRS AOA Feeenee . ais came to Tight in a small Indi- re crams aes. oney ‘ana town not long ago. In this _| town there is an officer, designated | as Inspectator of Streets and Road- ways, who receives the munificent salary of $250 per year. As the op- posing political parties are very nearly, balanced in this town, there is keen opposition, sp that when this office became vacant and theauthor- ities ordered an election to fill it there was a lively campaign for this emall plum no other elections being near. The Democratic candidate was a rather shrewd old fellow by the name of Esekiel Hicks, and it looked as though he would be suc- ceestul, as & neat little sum had been subscribed and turned over to him asa campaign fund. To the aston- ishment of everybody, however, he was defeated. “TI can’t account for it,” one of the Democratic leaders said, gloomily. “With that money, we should have a A ¥ Practical Politics. TO BEAUTIFY THE NECK. | Wanted te Get Rid of Him. RN ee Massage Is Good for Both Fat and | prom Harper's Weekly. MISSOURI STATE BANK . A number of politicians in Wash- j fogton were once discussing the good and bad points of variousstatesmen with reference to their attitude to- wards their friends and enemiee, when Senator Kean was reminded o! an instance in the career of the late Senator Sewell of New Jersey. It appears that Sewell had been a generous friend and an equally good hater, as was evidenced by his treat ment ofa Colonel Scovel, who it seems, had dared to dispute Sewell’s supremacy in Jersey politics. At one time Scovel imagined he had made his peace with Sewell, and ven- tured to ask « favor of his old enemy —something in the way of a pass to Chicago. The pass came to him by return mail. The next day, at the offices of the railroad of which the senator was an officer, Scovel thanked him for the courtesy; but as he did so he called attention to the fact that there was a0 provisions made in the pass for BUTLER, MISSOURI. It is all a matter of work, this of beautifying the neck. A throat that is flabby cannot be made firm without work, and hard work at thal, por can a thin one be built out any more easily; the point to be dwelt upon is that the desired result can be achieved. With what is now known of physical training, massage and skin foods, it is not only possible, but absolutely sure that the neck can be brought to lovely curves if a proper effort is made—ex- cepting, of course, in such cases as those of some disease, which lays waste beyond any physician's power to check, or one which causes an abnormal growth of adipose. The same exercises work both ways in the treatment. of the neck, just as they do in the treatment of other parts of the body. As a prominent physical trainer puts it: “It is all a matter of pace.” By this he means that if the exercises are taken at a rapid pace so that they are tiring, they will burn away superfluous flesh; if they are taken slowly and never to a point where they fatigue, they will cause the build- ing of new tissues.
