Unusually Heavy Rain This Sea- son Makes Land Appear Productive. Gaivectua, Tex. Sept. 25 —The homeseeker {s abroad in the land west of the Pecos, and it looks very much as ifhe would go back home sicker than when he came. This is not an agricultural region, yet the unusual rainfall this season has put the valleys in such fine condition that itis calculated to deceive the elect. Knowing ones declare that many a farmer is more liable to stake his all in a school land venture this year and go busted than at any period during which lands in this section have been thrown on the market. The rains for 1905 have excelled the record for 15 years, and are more than likely to eclipse that for 15 years to come. The creek beds and tanks have been kept filled with water, and vegetation has grown #0 luxuriantly that a tenderfuot might easily mistake acres of green weeds for some well cultivated crop or im agine that where weeds will th: ive lustily crops would do as well. The fuct that for the most part, at least as far as Jeff Davis county is concerued, well water is obsainable at no great depth is also calculated to mislead, since some, overlooking the porous nature of the soil, might think to make good by irrigation the deficiency in rainfall. Of the 6,000,000 acres of school land put upon the market Septem- ter 1, about 200,000 is in this coun- ty and the big mujority of the remainder is in the adloining coun- ties of El Paso, Presidio, Brewster, Reeves and Pecos. New York, Sept. 26.—State Attor- ney (ieneral Mayer arrived here to- day, intending to interview members of the Legielative Insurance Investi- gating Committee and its counsel. Regarding the political campaign funds presented by life insurance companies it was suid that the At- torney General had been intormed that the money so paid out would be restored to the insurance com. panies, but that this would not nec- essarily prevent him from taking any action he might think proper. He was American, through and through, and couldn't; } speak a word of French, It was on this journey that Mr. Huret heard the men talking of having a good time, “The expression ‘a good time’ is very American,” he says, “It means with them a combination of a rest and @ carouse. W. K. Vanderbilt, Jr, when asked regarding the possible speed to be nehed by a man in an automobile and the dangers encountered, said: “Lean go faster, The mile in 37 sec- onds will be accomplished this year, and next year, with faster machines, we will eo much faster than that e mile. record can be placed below seconds, that I know. Regarding 30 seconds, | am not so sure, but that will come when machines are perfected and constructed especially for the work, Such speed will follow naturally in time.” Barney Oldfield, the champion, said: “The mile in 35 seconds will be reached within a year, We shall have to con- struct special cars, scoop-shaped in the body and of special build, for straight- away racing only, when it may be possi- ble to go in 30 seconds. I believe that in two years we shall reach that mark, and | predict that ere the half minute is reached there will be a death to mark the way. ‘That is a frightful gait, and something totally unexpected and se- machine.” NEW CURE FOR APPENDICITIS. Surgery Saperseded and Patient Has But to Walk on All Fours Your Times a Day, The medical journals of Berlin re- port that some remarkable cures of mild cases of appendicitis are being made by a new method of treating the disease before the knife is needed. Certainly it is an original—almost an aboriginal—methoa, It is nothing less than to require the patient to walk on all fours for 30 min- utes four times a day. It is claimed that certain muscles around the vermi- form appendix are brought into play and strengthened by this quadrupedal eure, which are unused when a biped walks erect. Others are relaxed, and the localized inflammation has oppor- tunity to subside. A well known diplomat, celebrated for his haughtiness and _ punctilious- ness, was cured of beginning appendi- citis by this method lately. His asso- ciates and the fashionables are laugh- ing in their sleeves when their imagi- nations conjure up his proud excel- lency’s posture while undergoing treat- ment. The four-footed dose is recom- mended in dyspepsia, too, but, of course, {t should be taken before meals. CHOATE RE SCEIVS MEDAL. Ambassador Accepts Award of Royal Astsenomical Society in Be- half of Prof, Hale, Ambassador Choate attended the an- nual meeting of the Royal Astronom- ical society the other day to receive the society’s gold medal awarded to Prof. George Ellery Hale, director of the Yerkes observatory. In thanking the society on behalf of Mr. Hale, Mr. Choate said the award was a crowning honor for the work of any astronomer in the world. He said American as- tronomers enjoyed the rarest facilities, having about 300 clear days and nights @ year. Therefore they ought to achieve something. The president of the meeting eulogized Hale's work. His Only Hope, A Connecticut man has lost a for- tune on a technicality.
