While Democrats in some othercoun ties are engaged in heated contests, which have in many fnstances devel- oped into factional fights, into which this county’s splendid Democracy hasrefused to become excited or en ter into an internecine strife which the weakening of the party. Every Democrat has his own individual vast majority hold party good above personal preference and do not ap- prove of the campaign of vitupera- tion being engaged in between the candidates and some of their person- al friends. The wisdom of the course of our people is made manifest in view of the disgraceful scenes enacted in the city and Kansas City, where frauds and intimidations of Individual vot- ers are charged, resulting in contest- ing delegations, the party divided into factions, friends and neighbors arrayed against each other {n deadly feuds which will take years to heal over, In Kansas City this resulted in two conventions and two city tickets, Democratic success in that city being thereby greatly endan gered, Our central committee very wisely provided for a convention to select state delegates after the county ticket had been selected, butin plenty of time, being more than a month before the state convention. The candidates for governor and all oth- er state offices are invited to come into Bates county, get acquainted with our people and discuss party issues and public questions, but we who attempt to arouse the passions of our people by personal abuse of another candidate, that he will not profit thereby. We hold that he is notagood Democrat who willendan- ger the success of his party for bis own advantage and the good Demo- crats of Bates county, we are sutis- fied, will not suffer it, weeecemer The name of Herbert G. Walton of our announcement column as a can- didate for nomination of County Treasurer. Mr: Walton was born in Boone county, Kentucky. He came to Bates county in the fall of 1883, and has taken an active interest in the county’s affairs and has been an active and efficient party worker. He was a Democratic committeeman for a number of years. and served as secretary of the County Democratic Central committee for four years. He has acceptably filled a number of township offices, being collector for Summit township now, but this is the first race he has ever made fora county office. He isthekind of Dem- ocrat who never misses a primary or convention, thereby assisting in keeping up his party organization and oneléetion day can always be found at the polls working for Dem- ocratic success. Mr. Walton is well qualified for the office he seeks, is worthy in every particular, would make an acceptable candidate on the ticket and a very popular officer. therefore not only the very best men should be selected as committeemen, but those who are willing to take an meetings and assist in the party or- ganization. A township that has a poor or indifferent committeeman will not be properly represented in the party organization. We want to urge upon the township conventions not to neglect this very important matter. ° : Saturday nominated Richard Barth- oldt to succeed himself as congress- —_—_—_—o The jury which will try William der of a Pinkerton detective, was day. making lite; has held a number of township | | of congress by April 15th end sffices which he always filled with "He made the race for this May 2nd, We are of Mingo, to the action of the Democratic convention to ries on governor last Saturday and be held Monday, May 2nd, 1904.
