When asked if it isa flying machine Sir Hiram did not deny it. Nearly two years ago he offered $250,000 to anybody who would give him an idea for a flying machine without a balloon attachment. “The airship of the future will not be a balloon of whatever shape or size,” said Maxim. “Santos-Dumont has brought balloon dirigibility to the high- est point it can attain. “Stanley Spencer the other day gave London a demonstration of the inevita- ble, irremediable limitations of the bal- loon. He came along from Crystal palace to St. Paul's excellently, because he had a slant of wind in that direction. But he had no more chance of driving his sau- Sage-shaped machine back against the wind than he would have of driving a Teal sausage through a steel plate. Stanley is a man of the highest courage. He is the most expert ballonist we have and has rendered great service to aerostatics, But none greater than when he showed the futility of attempting to get a balloon to go against even a moder- ate wind,” BOATS HAVE GOOD GUNNERS. The battleship Alabama, which, with the Kearsarge, Illinois and the Texas, recently engaged in target practice off Tompkinsville, made a world’s tecord. Built to be fired at therate-of-one-shot- every two” filn- utes, the gun crew of the Alabama have handled the action of the 13-inch guns so that two and a half hits have been made in that time. The highest individual honors went to Seaman Brightup, as gun pointer of No. 4, who made four hits in two minutes and eight seconds, the tar. get being 100 yards away, and the ship steaming at an eight knot rate, Sea- men Allen and Fletcher, gun point: ers of gun No. 3, scored 1.14 hits a minute. It is said by the officers of the ship that the record of the two guns has not been equaled, for of 16 shots fired all hit the target with the exception of one, which struck the floating frame on which the rectangle of: canvas, 21 feet long and 17 feet high, was erect- ed. Had it been in battle, the shots would have struck the water line of the enemy—a desirable point. AUTO USED TO WIN A BRIDE. Obdurate Father Is Forced to Terms by Fast Ride with Daughter and Her Sweetheart, The hearing of a case at Paris where the police made a charge of excessive speeding of an automobile revealed a new use for the machine. A merehent and his daughter were riding in a car driven by the merchant's partner. The latter suddenly sent the machine for- ward at a terrific speed. The mer- chant, who was terrified at the rate they were traveling, begged his part- ner to stop. The latter replied by de- manding the hand of his daughter or threatening otherwise to drive the ma- chine against a tree. It was a case of the merchant’s daughter or his life, and the merchant yielded. ARE ENEMIES OF FLIRTING. Russian Organization Will Make Vio- lation of Initiation Vows Cost a Round Sum, A hundred young men of the most ex- elusive society of. St. Petersburg, Rus- sia, have established a club to be known as the League of the Enemies of Flirts. Hereafter, when youthful impulse be- trays a member of the league into the indiscretion of a wink or a kiss unsanc- tioned by the laws of strict propriety, he will pay a fine of $600. A second of- fense will cost $1,600, and a third will mean expulsion. The extenuating circumstances of a fall from grace is the fact that the sin- ners’ repentance fund goes to the poor, The Sailor’s Psalm, How many people—landsmen, at all events—are aware that one of the psalms is often called the sailor's psalm? Those who were at the opening of the east Lon- don “Jack’s Palace” by the prince of Wales will know i, for the name was used there. It is course, Psalm 107, wherein occur the #autiful and familiar words, “They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters —these see the works of the Lord and His usually read as part of the simple serv- ices which take place on Sunday on ships at sea. For that reason it is known ag the saflor’s psalm. How About Thist A Boston man has a house automobile afloat on the state’s roads. The molds, it is believed, were made of plaster of paris scraped from the walls of cells: There is a belief that certain employes who did favors for the prisoners were given the bogus money as tips, and that they innocently passed it into circula- tion. The leader of the counterfeiters is now completing his second term for this offense. The others were profes- sional criminals, When the leader was caught he said he had known that he and those arrested with him would be detected but that {t was a good thing to have money with which to get luxuries from the outside. SCIENTISTS MAKE DISCOVERY. Activity or Power of Radium Greatly Multiplied by Mixtore with Sub- stance Called Willemite. By working in their experiments to- gether Dr. George F. Kunz, the honorary curator of the American Museum of Nat- ural History, and Dr. Charles Basker- ville, of the University of North Caro- lina, believe they have made a valuable discovery in connection with the mys- terious substance known as radium. The discovery is that by mixing radium with natural willemite In a pulverized pow- der the activity or power of the former substance ts multiplied a hundredfold and probably a thousandfold, That at least Is the temporary effect of mixing the two substances, Time must tell whether one will nullify the other, Willemite is a comparatively -cheap-stlicate-zine>Tt1s” possible also | watt that that there fs in willemite a substance which is as yet unrecognized as a dis- tinct element, but which produces the radio-activity that has awakened the en- thusiasm of the two experimenters, but thus far {t fs taken for granted that the one substance merely stimulates the ac- tivity of the other. It is the assertion of Dr. Kunz that radium without the interposition of glass is much more highly active, and he further asserts that certain rays of radium are possibly equivalent to the ultra-violet light and that the ray does not penetrate, but is retained in glass. NEW FIRE MASK A MARVEL. Improved Helmet Recently Invented by a Member of the Paris Department, A member of the Paris fire brigade has invented a new mask which is claimed to be a great improvement over all pre- vious ones. It can be fixed to an ordinary helmet and around the neck by straps. The visor is of mica, protected by wire. In front of the mouth two pipes open, one furnishing fresh air and the other carry- ing off what has been breathed. A reser- voir worn on the back as a knapsack con- tains two compartments, one holding two steel jars filled with compressed alr, The other bag, which is called the lung and which is connected by copper tubing with the steel jars and special mechan- ism, admits air only at nominal pressure to the lung, whence it is conveyed to the mouth. The mask leaves the ears uncovered. An electric bell gives warning when the supply of air is running out. The ap- paratus weighs only 12 kilograms and will be put into immediate use in the Paris fire brigade. RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS BEGIN. Students from South Afrien and Ger- many Enter Oxford Univer- sity in England, The first batch of students selected for the Cecil Rhodes scholarships at Ox- ford—seven from South Africa and five from Germany—go in residence there in October. The American contingent will not be selected for another year. These scholars are to be distributed through the different colleges and are selected as much for personal charac- teristics, which make them the centers of influence, as for their attainments as scholars. The opinion among the Ox- ford dons is that 20 years or more must elapse before the Rhodes scheme can begin to exercise the influence he hoped for. : Great Electrical Laboratory.
