Far more note- by worthy is the memory of an expert pi- s ano player, who will play an entire sea- ee son's concerts without a note of printed wnusie before him. His memory is so perfect that hundreds of thousands of notes must be at the orderly and instant disposal of the will. And this ts com- bined with a multiplicity of synchronous recollections of timbre, tempo, expres- sion, etc. The mystery is at present past the hinting of any explanation, and this fact is as beautiful as itis appalling. It shows us, declares American Medicine, how far we are from any real science of psychology. Physicians note the strange thrusting of disease among the mechanisms of memory, the morbid ef- fects of some neoplasm or injury to parts of the convolutions of the brain where- 3 rd by some memories are lost temporarily ew or permanently, in part or completely, while others are unaffected. Even this leaves us in amazement at the inscruta- ble complexity and methods of the cellu- lar machine. But through these morbid injuries we catch tantalizing glimpses which some day, properly studied and followed up, may bring some psychologic physi- cian to an unraveling of the mystery. tifter To the om... of the majority of the country Jersey justice was strangely blinded when it punished the Newark woman who threw pieces of coal at an organ grinder for persisting in playing worn-out ragtime tunes, remarks the Baltimore American. Unless, indeed, for the waste of good coal in a bad cause. Danger in Sevond C ood, Noah Robey, of Plainfield, N. J., who claims to be 132 years old, is down with the measles. This second childhood business, says the Chicago Record-Herald, appears to be danger- ous if it is carried too far. Gillet, of Venora, Baltimore ounty, Md., has lost $2,750 worth of prize attle because of their inordinate ap- petite for aged ginger snaps, mixed and fruit cakes. Eleven of his fine herd of Hereford cows died after a too free in- ‘ulgence in the American delicacies men- tioned. He valued the cows at $250 each. Mr. Gillet, ike many farmers of the coun- ty, has been in the habit of buying these cakes by the ton and feeding them to his cattle and hogs in small quantitles. Sat- urday night the bar door was left open and 11 of his cows got into the building and ate ginger snaps and cakes till they could eat no more. Dr. Dickenson Gor- such, of Glencoe, was called in, but he could do nothing to relleve them. First one and then another would fall to the ground and die. Dr. Gorsuch said death was caused by the large quantity of the cakes eaten. They being in a dry state, caused the cows to drink freely of water, with fatal results. iden thes 7 Nothing But Envy. Chicago insists that typhoid germs cannot live during the 250-mile trip to St. Louls in the drainage canal, but we know, remarks the St. Louis Re- public, that any germ native of the Windy City is sufficiently lusty to swim the Atlantic ocean, land in Eu- rope and organize a germ trust which would greatly increase the foreign typhoid fever business. The Strenuous Education. The women of Kansas have won their campaign for reform in the schools, the principal feature of which was that courtship may be carried en in school hours. The classes in higher education in that state hereafter, says the Philadelphia Inquirer, will be un- der the direction of Prof. Cupid. Still of Some Une. In some parts of Switzerland they have laws which make it necessary to have horses hitched to automobiles so that other horses will not be fright- ened by them.
