Mickelberry trustee for Viola Simmons, de- Of Bates cou arkley, D.C. fendants Civil adtion for delin who blushes does not always live to waste its fragrance on the desert air, for many celebrated men and women in childhood were noted for their blushing. Painters and sculptors and poets, the officials say, have had their blushes analyzed as an exhibtion of modesty, while thoy really were simply a mani- festation of talent and genius. “It's hard to say how blushing and mentality are corelated,” Dr. Krauskopf said, “as the causes of blushes are many. The generally accepted theory is that blushing is caused by involuntary nerv- ous action that sets the heart to work faster. We have noticed that children who blush when they are startled are, in many cases, bundles of nerves. They are like race horses, so full-blooded that they jump when touched with a thread. This nerve equipment makes them able to grasp points readily and to see through their lessons in a flash, while their stolid companions who do not blush have to plod along. “We are going to follow the question up and will try to get data that will show whether blushing is an indication of brightness or the contrary.” The experiments wil! be carried on tn both the schools and the laboratory. Classes from the schools will visit the board rooms on Saturdays to contribute to science by having their heads meas- ured, their lungs tested and the general peculiarities of memory, imagination, emotion and temperament noted. - As it is a well-known fact that a blusher will not biush when she knows she is expected to blush and conversely, the information will be obtained largely from the teachers, who will be provided with blank books in which to note the number of times her charges turn red and the causes, whether mortification, pleasure or surprise. The theory will be worked out by ald of the old classification of tempera- ments into melancholic, choleric, san- guine and phlegmatic. The officials be- Neve that those who are lIfsted as chol- eric and sanguine are born to blush, while the dispositions of the o@hers ren- der blushing In some cases almost an impossibility. From the fact that blushing {fs more general than ambidexterity the Investi- gators exnect that their conclusions on the new theory will have a greater array of facts for substantiation than even their di the ability to use both t ‘Neated mental incapacity. jaintif, v Green, de- Order of Publication.
