Washington, July 18.—The State department has received a reply from Russia stating that it neither would receive nor consider the matter of the Jewish petition on the subject of the Kischineff incident, This informa- tion came in the form of acablegram from Mr. Riddle, the American charge at St. Petersburg to whom was com- mitted the delicate task of inquiring of the Russian government as to its attitude with respect to the presenta- tion of the petition, It is believed that this will end the matter and that no further steps will be taken by this government to bring the view of the petitioners to the attention of Russia, althongh as yet no consideration has been given » by the President to the course to be pursued in. the light of Russia’s re- sponse to our inquiry. The reply that Russia would make to all suggestions on the subject of the Kischineff massacre wasforecast- ed very clearly by the Associated Press some weeks ago in an author: ized statement when the public was definitely informed that Russia re- garded the affair as an internal mat- ter as to which she, in the exercise of her own sovereignty, must refuse to receive suggestions from any other governinent or outside source. WOMAN ASSASSINATED BESIDE HER INFANT. Mrs, Sarah Hill Shot to Death in Mem- phis While She Was Asleep. Memphis, Tenn., July 18 —At 2 o’clock Thursday morning Mrs. Sarah Hill was assassinated whilely- ing in bed with her twin babies, fice mouths old. The tragedy occurred near Covington, Tenn. The assasein crept up to the win- dow, raised the sash a few inches, aud, thrusting the muzzle of a shot- gun through the aperture, fired the contents of both barrels {nto the help- less woman's body. Death was instantaneous. Mrs. Dyer Ferguson, occuping an adjoin- ing room, heard the shot, followed by the heavy fall of the murdered woman’s body to the floor. Neither of the infants were touched. Sheriff Johnston attempted to trace the assassin with a bloodhound, but the efforte were futile. Mrs. Hill. was suing her husband for divorce. T. Leftwich, who had been left with him in his ward, and intended to give the patient a spoonful of hydrochlorie acid and pepsin.
