T. walked into the office of Warden Jewett Wednes- day at the state penitentiary and gave himself up as a prisoner. Shaw said he had been convicted and sen- tenced to the penitentiary for four years for manslaughter and that he came alone in order to saveexpenses. Warden Jewett informed Shaw that he could not be received as a prisoner without commitment papers. The warden telegraphed to Lawton, 0. T., where the trial of Shaw took place, tohave the paperssent. Shaw had no money to pay for lodging at the hotel, and Warden Jewett ar- ranged for him to stay at the prison farm pending the arrival of the regu- lar commitment papers. It is said that Shaw, with others living in his neighborhood, were an- noyed by a band of rowdies at night, and in a fight to rid the neighbor- hood of the disturbers Shaw shot and killed one of them. Says We Are China's Friend. New York, April 24.—The new Chi- nese minister, Sir Cheng, K. C. M. G., was the guest of honor at the fifth annual dinner of the American Asiat- it association at Delimonico’s last night. Hespoke on “China and the United States,” Sir Cheng spoke in excellent English and was frequently interrupted by an applause. Omaha, April 23.—Miss Pearl Saw- yer has eloped with William Ostran- der, jr, making her second runaway marriage with him within a year. Previously she won a suit for a divorce and was granted $600 ali- mony. Friends accidentally met the couple as they were hastening to catch the midnight train for Kansas City. Ostrander met Miss Sawyer, who Was an expert skater, as a high school girl, at a rink, To bring about the reconciliation, young Ostrander persuaded his’ mother, Mrs John H. Slaver, of Cedar Rapids, to help him. Mrs. Slaver came from the Lowa town last week. Nearly ev- ery day she took Miss Sawyer driv- ing. Battleship lowa Disabled. Pensacola, Fla, April 22.—The battleship Iowa, which departed Monday to complete her target prac- ticein the gulf, was towed in last night, totally disabled by a steam- pipe bursting and tearing away the steering gear. The accident happened yesterday afternoon, and three government tugs were immediately sent to the ship’s relief. The extent of the dum- age is great, and it will require ten days or more to make repairs. The vessel is now lying at the navy yard.
