Carried Away by Force to Dens of Wickedness. St. Louis, Feb. 26.—As the result ofa crand jury investigation insti- tated by the circuitattorney, Joseph W. Folk,a raid on a syndicate of vice was made this afternoon on bench warrants charging Louis and Max Soviner, alias Sabiner and Charles, alias “Beef” Williams with conducting “slave houses” where young girls are systematically sold into vice. Nathan Kreunzer, a partner of the Soviner Bros. in the saloon business, was also arrested on @ bench war- rant It is expected that wholesale arrests of policemen, women and real estate owners will follow to-morrow as the result of disclosures made before the grand jury by the half hundred witnesses examined to-day. Paducah, Ky., Feb. 27.—During the hearing of a disorderly condiet | charge against Doctor A. Perkins, alleged clairvoyant, theatrical in- stractor and vital healer, in the City Court, W. R. Stanley, of Memphis, a witness for the city, made a state- ment that almost caused mob vio- lence. . Perkins was charged with taking undue liberties with Gertrude Lynch, @ 14-year-old girl from Memphis, who came here to join a thea’ company which Perkins claimed to be forming. x While on the stand, Stanley made a remark reflecting on the honor of women in general. No eooner had he said it than At torney Jesse Moss for the defense jumped to his feet und called the wit- ness a liar, repeating it forcibly two or three times. He also told Stanley that he could find him on the street just aftercourt adjourned or at his office. Attorney Moss had followers. There was a general disapproval of the witness’ remarks, and Special Judge W. A. Berry, anticipating}. trouble, loudly called out: ‘“Courtis adjourned until 9 o'clock to-morrow morning.” Stanley was rushed to a room, and two or three persons tried to reach him, but.the police interfered. Quick- ly a large crowd of men gathered on the outside of the hall and waited for Stanley, but Chief of Police Collins would not let him leave the hall. Later Stanley was locked up on a breach of the police charge. Judge Berry afterwards stated that he would not have fined Attor- ney Moss had he struck Stanley. L. Tucker’s Drug Store. Dog-oned Costly. Nevada, Mo., Feb, 21.—Albert Badger must pay over $700 for kill- ing W. I. Fisher’s dog, a pedigreed foxhound. The owner sued for $100 damages. The case was tried three times, appealed to the Kansas City court of appeals, decided adversely to the plaintiff there and is dismisseu by agreement that the defendant pay court costs. Badgér’s wife awoke him in tle night of June 11, 1900. She heard strange noises in the house, Badger got his gun and went around the house. He heard movements in the dining room and demanded that the intruder come out. Fisher's dog leaped from the window, and Badger shot him.
