Messages were received at a distance of 1,000 miles at sea, but owing to the re- stricted power of the batteries oper- ating the station on the vessel the electrician on board was only able to transmit a message for a distance of not exceeding 300 miles, The Morse alphabet is used in transmit- ting the messages, and the charac- ters are recorded on a paper ribbon the same as a stock broker's ticker. The total receipts tor the year were $579,866. The expense for the year was maintenance of agency and schools, $53,791; other disbursements, $397. The Osages own 1,400,000 acres of land.
