VOL. XXIV. BUTLER, MISSOURI, THURSDAY, AUGUST 2s, 1902. . Democrats Squarelv Confront- ing Questions Presented. Republican Leaders Frighten ed Campaign Literature Prepared for Dis- tribution, and List of Assignments of Speakers in course of Preparation. ipecial Correspondence. F St. Louis, “Aug. 25.--Informati on received at the headquarters of the State Democratic Committee — this week, clearly indicates that the Re- publican leaders and managers are anxious to abandon the State iss ues they have themselves raised before the campaign is fairly opened. The school fund and “looted treasury” bogies so utterly absurd that they . east shadows on all who call them up, and are frightening no one ex- cept the republican managers and organs who entertain a frantic desire to take up something else, * It has been conclusively shown that Missouri’s school fund, held sacred and inviolate, is in better sbape and under more prudent wut t- | Story of the Disappearance of Homer | MEETING STATE ISSUES. f0RMER Bares covyry BOY MISSING, Brand Told in a Letter to His Brother. Homer Brand, a young son of Dr. Brand, of the Spragu@neighborhood, has disappeared from Alamo, old Mexivo, where he was employed, and it is feared he has perished. The Nevada Mail publishes the following letter written to a brother, which re- lates the story of his disappenrance: Los ANGELES, CAL., Aug. 16, 1902, Mr. R. L. Brand, San Pedro, Cal. Dean Sins—About thirteen days ago your tyother, Homer Brand, who isat Alamo, B C Mexico, wasfeeling ladly, so asked for a lay-off to g8 and visit some hot springs about 80 miles digtant from Alamo. He en- gaged a horse and saddle aud start- ed out in the morning. That was the last heard of him for four days, wher a man who lives at the hot springs, where Homer was going, came to town; he said he had heard or seen nothing of him. There were parties in camp from different places around the country where Weoue might have gone, and all said they had seen nothing of him’ On the night of the fourth day al- ter Homer had disappeared, we sent out searching parties, They return: edou the second night and had found his horse with a sheep herder who jeaid he had seen Homer riding the agement than the sehool fund ofjtiorse two days before and that most of the states, and that 10 ts sit iar in character of its management to the state school funds of HMlinots, Ohio, Wisconsin and Michigan,—all publican states. It has beén dem- onstrated that with the payment of $478,000, the enormous debt foisted upon the taxpayers of Missouri by republican extravigance, corruption and mismanagement, will have been entirely wiped out, and that the rev enues of the state are ample for all purposes It has been shown that) in deri eratic Missouri the railroads are us: ~ gessed an average of S1LASG) pet mile while in republican Kansas they are only assessed at $6,780 per mile: that state taxes are much less in democratic Missouri than they are in republican Hlinois, and that our present tax rate cau be still further reduced to 17% cents on the $100 valuation ifthe people shall deter mine at the eoming election, to con- tinue the existing investment of cur school funds Meanwhile it is becoming moreand Inore apparent the first purpose at the republican mafingers is to secure control of the legislature. whereby they may elect Col. Richard ©. Ker- eps of St. Louis, a multimillionaire, to the United Stutes Senate, where he can vote for the continuance of high protective tariffs, the trusts ato the gold standard, In order to ac- complish this end, i: is said that President Roosevelt and Mark Han ne are entirely willing to pour mone’ into Missouri, in the hope that it may secure a republican successor to George G Vest. Having abandoned themselves to mendacious slandering of the state, the republican organs aud inanagers fill are already ina bad way, before even the democrats get a good ready to fight them on their own issues.
