Kelly was arrested last night in | front of his home, 2603 Bruce terrace, j}ou the complaint of his wife. Mrs, husband, who was intoxicated, had razor, shesaid, but the blow had been warded off by her eldest son, # crip- with his crutch. While Mra, Kelly told her story to the policeman the officer listened, expecting to hear some noise from Kelly, who was at that time inside the house, “Your husband appears to be very quiet,” said the patrolman, “He ig quiet just now, because he was struck dumb while he was com- mitting awful blasphemy,”’ said Mrs. Kelly. At this point of the conversation Kelly came from the house and was taken into custody by the officer. The prisoner actually appeared to be dumb, His throat and mouth twitched convulsively as he made an ineffectual effort to speak. When he found that he could not utter aword he became so frightened that the shock sobered him, aud when he reached the Northern: police station he appeared to be entirely sober. When taken before the desk, Kelly made signs that he could not speak, and was handed a piece of paper and a pencil name and age Ou the paper he wrote his This morning the brought before Justice White, he la boriously wade all his statements in writing, ed, but was fined €5 and costs and sentenced additionally to 30 days in jail, Mra. Steel Saws Concealed in Pie. Memphis, Tenn., March 13.—Be cause two jail guards became inter- ested ina pie sent Will Lanier, sen- tenced to die March 19, at Aberdeen, Miss., his third escape was probably prevented. The men broke open the pastry, and found that it contained six fine steel saws. The pie was sent to the man by his mother by the hands of a 7-year old boy. Lanier has broken jail twice since his sentence of death for murder and extra watch is kept upon his person. His relatives have asserted that he will not die at the appointed time. London, larch 13.— ‘he war secre- tary, Mr Brodrick, announced in the House of Commons to-day that he understood that Gen. Lord Meth- uen, who was captured, severely wounded, by Gen. Delarey, March 10, | had been released and was expected | to arrive at Klerksdorp, southwest- jern Transvaal, to-day. The gener- | al’s condition was favorable. Mr. Brodrick added that the ex- change of Gen. Methuen for Com- mandant: Kritzinger had not been contemplated. The trial of the com- mandant had been postpened be- cause consideration of the evidence to be presented had not been com- pleted. Why Delurey chose to release Methuen instead of keeping him as a hostaye for the fair treatment of Boers in British hands or for ex- change for Crenje énly can be guess- ed. The opinien is advanced that Methu-n was set free for human rea- sons solely. Delarey’s little army lives in the saddle. It has no camp, no base of operations-and probably no direct or certain communication with other Boer commanderies If Methuen were retained as a pri- soner, he would be kept constantly on the move, and would hay: to be transported in a Cape cart, which on acvount of his wound might soon cause his death as avery humane wan, ‘Then, too, it is reasoned that the freeing of Methuen will have a good effect in tending to increase the world’s ad- miration for the humanity as well as the courage of the men of the Trans- vaal, Aiter the announcement. in parlia- ment of Methuen’s release, Timothy M. Healy (Urish Natione list), amid Delarey is known ernment to show equalmagnanimity anid release Commandant Kritzir Mr. Brodrick said subsequently that the telegram received did not specifically say that Gen, Methuen had been released, ont from the faet that he was in the hands of a British medical officer, it was presumed that the general had been released. Japan Spoils For a Fight. Seattle, Wash., Mareh 13.—Captain FL HE Sinith, man, who arrived here yesterday on a well-known inglish- the Tosa Maru from Japan, declares that war between that country and Russia is soon to come “Trouble over the Russian oceupa- tion of Manchuria is the cause of the troubies said Capt. Smith, “and the Aapittiese are spotting torr chanceto whipsome one. The H preparations for the si ist come very soon re makit ap chat “When it does come, Lngland will be forced to help the Mikado’s army and the war may involve all Europe. In the meantime the Russians are pushing work en the railroad across Manchuria, and to this the Japanese have no objection Russia, however, must defend the road against the at- tack of the natives, About 16,000 coolies are now empioyed in the work, One of the interesting features of Walter Williams’ letters is the com- parasons he makes between the for- eign sections he has visited to some parts of Missouri territory. In de- scribing Egypt he says: “Upon the map it looks quite large. In reality, however, when only the cultivable and inhabitable land is included, it is absurdly small. It contains but 11,000 square miles or searcely one- sixth the territory ot the state of Missouri. Stretched upon the map of Misseuri Egypt would include about the Missouri river bottom lauds, averaging ten miles wide from Kansas City to the Mississippi, and the shore of that river to St. Louis forthe Delta. It is more densely populated than any country iu Eu- rope. The same population to the square mile in Missouri would give that state 54 million: people and che same yield per acre exports more than sixty fold.” How Are Your Kidneys obama dares haces! ar er The election of city officers is of great importance to this town and porn me Carpet & Shater $ g Manufacturing Co. | We Pay Casn For } oultry..Eggs» Hides, Furs and ‘ool- Get our Prices. Aagner, for thirty years a physi- cian in this city and a member of one of the oldest: families in this section, was to-day held for the action of the grand jury as the result ef aninquest over the body of a baby of Mrs. Peter Blair. It was found yesterday alive and doubled up in a shoe box, thrown into a garbage can in the rear of the Blair house. At the inquest to-day a negro woman pointed to Dr, Hag- neras the man whom she saw place the box in the can. The latter, ad- mitting he was the man, said he fully believed the child was dead at the time. The physician at the hospital where the child was carried after be- ing found testified that the baby was alive when received and the negro woman testified that the child was crying when she found it.
