HA Hi Hi iH Saar ANECDOTES OF THEODORE ROOSEVELT. Things Not Generally Known Coneern- ing His Easy Life. President Roosevelt strenuously objects to having photographs of his children published. During the cam- paign a number of requests were re- ceived by him from pictorial papers, but in each case he declined. “If too much attention is paid to children at the age of mine, they may become spoiled,’ he declared. President Roosevelt prefers that his wife and children be eliminated from his career 80 far as the public is con- cerned. During the campaign Senator Han- na asked Mr. Roosevelt to wear a silk hat in the larger cities. “But I don’t like them,” objected Col. Roosevelt. “I think, though, you had better wear one occasionally,’’ persisted Mr. Hanna. “All right, senator; the next time I go to Albany Ill get out my silk hat and wear it,”’ replied Roosevelt. The next time he went to Albany was after the close of the campaign. Col. Roosevelt wore his sombrero to the last. Julian Ralph once asked Mr. Roose- velt: ‘What did you expect to be or dream of being when you were a boy?” “I do not recollect that I dreamed at all or planned at all,’ he answer- ed. “I simply obeyed the injunction, ‘Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do that with all thy might,’ so I took up what came along as it came. Since then [ have gone on Lincoln’s motto, ‘Do the best; if not, then the best possible.’ "’ President Roosevelt was once tray- eling in Idaho, and passed a book- store in the window of which wasa copy of his “Winning of the West.’’ Going into the bookstore, he inquir- ed: ‘Who is this author, Roosevelt? “OQ,” said the bookseller, ‘‘he’s a ranch driver.”” “And what do you think of his book?” asked the Presi- dent. ‘Well,” said the dealer, slowly and deliberately, ‘I've always thought I'd like to meet the author and tell him that if he had stuck to running a ranch, and give up writing books, he'd have made a powerful more of a suecess at his trade.” On one occasion, when he was speed- ing over the Pennsylvania Railroad, en route to Washington, a fond fath- er held his boy in one arm and acopy of Judge in the other. A cartoon of an Irishman on the warpath, knifein hand, and savage teeth displayed, loomed up before the small boy. “I know him!’ said theboy. “O, I guess you don’t,” said the father, suspect- ing nothing, and seeing no cause for alarus ‘Yes, I do!’ persisted the bad voy: “I know who he is and what veis' He's called Teddy Roose- velt. ind he fights the Indians stand- ing ». horseback, and what he can’t cu pieces he tears with his teeth.” Pr sident Roosevelt is a religious meu, and wherever he goes stands wellin estimation of his neighbors tor iis active participation in works vf reogion and mercy. He carries a portly pocket of loose coin, au equal- ly well proportioned purse and a checkbook that rapidly becomes a packoge ofstubs. Yet his habits are so regular that the least irregulgrity ina business transaction attracts his watcifal eversight, and household auts—always long in his employ —w!) le realizing the freedom they en- joy, sive the closest attention to the det softheir stewardship. A friend panying him on a jaunt about New York saw a $100 bill disappear in portemonaie of a solicitor for ne aceo a -known charity in the same five m os that the President called at- t ptaan overcharge of fivecents. A tblack, taking advantage of the | cesident's haste, tried tosatisfy h ith a nickel less of change, but t igie eye of the public adminis- tr or detected the petty swindle. E=pectaily with newspaper men has President been popular. During the campaign in which he was e «ted governor of New York a jour- n listic headquarters was establish- e tat Oyster Bay, L. L, and the news- Piper men camped on the lawn in teuts. One evening, when all was dark and still—and it is pretty late, or, rather, early, in a camp of news- Paper men when it becomes still en- ough to sleep—a noise was heard, an alarm raised and the word passed th ew thatan intruder was present. “Iam | the culprit, boys!” rang out the fa- miliar voice of Candidate Roosevelt, match in hand. “I just ran in to see bow you are getting along, or if you are not getting along at all. How goes it, and who is very thirsty after his day of toil?’ Every head was up, and for half an hour Mr. Roose- velt stayed with the boys and cheer- ed them up, laughing and talking, BOER LOSSES WERE FOUR HUNDRED AT ITALIA CAS.
