Henry Oxendine Found Dead in Hotel Willis With Dying Woman Bending Over Him, Pistol in Hand. Joplin, Mo., March 23.—Henry Ox- endine, a well known bartender of Webb City, was found dead in a room at the hotel Willis in- this city to-night with a bullet through his heart. By his side lay Mrs. Nettie Eckles, a woman with whom he is said to have had intimate relations, fatally wounded by a bullet through her breast. In her hand she held a smoking pistol when the parties that had been alarmed by theshots enter- ed the room The woman was fondling the dead man and ealling him endearing terms. When she had partly recov- told a discon- nected story to the effect that Oxen- dine had first burned his watch and clothes in the stove and then shot her and killed himself. Opposed to this was the fact that her breast was burned with powder and that she is said to have repeatedly threatened the dead man’s life. The parties had known each other in Webb City. She left there several weeks ago for her mother’s home at Sherwood. Shecame to the Willis hotel on Thursday and again to-day. She met Oxendine on the street early in the evening. They went up into her room about half an hour before the shooting. People who heard it say that four shots were fired, one first and then three in succession a moment after. | There were two wounds on the body of the dead man, which indicates | that the shots which killed him were | fired last. The woman cannot live A woman has a right to be positive on matters which are matters of personal knowledge and experience. By permission of the president, Secretary Long has issued a leave of absence for the U.S. Marine Band of Washington, to visita number of the leading cities, to give exhibition con- certs. This band was organized un- der a special act of congress, approv- ed March 3d, 1899, and enlarged to 74men. The pay of the musicians was increased three and four fold, and the leader was made a lieuten- ant. For this the friends of the band labored many years, and it is now undoubtedly the best paid Na- tional band in the world, as well as the largest. The leader, Lieut. Wm. M. Santel- mann, had long been a prominent musical light in the Capital, and is a musician of the highest ability. He is a native of Hanover, Germany, and is a graduate of the Conserva- tory of Leipsig. It is the desire of the officials that this band, which is a matter of great expense tothe government, but a necessary adjunct to official life in Washington, may be heard by the ople at large, and that they may in this way be able to judge of its greatness and the wisdom of the ap- propriations which maintain it.
