Siperstition Which Includes Seven Heavens and Seven Hells. Mew York Journal. Febraary is the month to die in # you live in the Sulu Islands, U.S. A. In February the gates of the sweven hells are locked, and however vevil has been the life of the man, the seventh heaven becomes the abode of his soul, which takes flight from its envelope of clay upon the back of a aniik white steed of supernatural beauty and wings its way through pase to the eternal home of those eheved of Allah and Mahomet. Phe religion of the Sulus is ¢hat of # Mifuomet—in theory. In practice Et is Ube wildest kind of superstition, Worship is of the most primitive sort very Friday the agunsummons the faithful to his mosque to hear him ekant the invocation to Mahomet, followed by a few verses from the Koran. This is the only worship, as we understand worship. The fast of Ramadan—the Moham mpedan lent—is observed strictly, eternal din. ! The second is Naruk-Sagar, where the sinner is tortured forever by ani- mals and machines. | The third hell is Naruk-Sigmilti. | This is the place of torment for that }unruly member, the tongue. It is 'gaid that it is populated principally i by women. The fourth hell is Naruk-Abus, where all ugliness is congregated, where the aesthetic soul will forever recoil in terror from all that is evil in art, in morals, in taste. Beauty is banished therefrom; and as beauty is a synonym for truth it is presumed that this is the abode of whomsoever loveth and maketh a lie. In the fifth hell, Naruk-Janix, the souls engage in an eternal warfare with lances. But the joy of victory is denied, for each receives wounds at every engagement, but none can give wounds back. Naruk-Zaalt, the sixth hell, is the place of thirst. No guessing is neces- say to decide what souls will find their punishment in this arid spot. The seventh hell is Naruk-Jamia, the place of torture by fire. The descriptions of these heavens and hells are furnished by the learned Pandita, a Mussulman priest, to M. A. DeGeriolles for his interesting arti- ele on Sulu and Mindanao, that is published in the November number of Le Monde Moderne. M. De Geriolles remark: “From the terrible Naruk- Yahana Lord us!" whence it may be presumed that he is a lover of peace and quiet. good deliver Trust Those Who have Tried. I suffered from catarrh of the worst kind and never hoped for cure, but Ely’s Cream Balm seems to do even however. During the month that # Gis feast lasts the Sulu abstains re- 3 Mgdewer!y from food and drink from ithetisawm to the setting of the sun. SDurmg ‘tirese hours he neither eats nor drinks, bathesnor shaves; neith- eer does he permit the smallest caress ) fraw his wivee—be is entitled to four, ~ and asimewy concubines as he wishes —~erom his children. “But the cult of Mahomet is really a small part of the Sulu religion. The Moros, as the inhabitants of the is- Rand are called, live in constant ter- ror of Saitan (satan), and in every werious affair—such as anearthquake, @ pestilence or a war—they strive to appease the demon or todisarm him @iveat dishes of dainties are thrown Aute the sea or the river for the de- Mectation of the fierce black devil, sho is supposed to be human enough ‘in his appetite to divert himself with these peace offerings and forget or megiect wuljerts. MAut itis in the rewards of punish- ments for faithful or evil performance of the duties of this life that the wreros are rich. They have seven heavens for the good and as many hells for the bad. Their idea of the judgment is vague, undefined, and they can not explain by whom their abode in the future life is assigned to them. The first heavenis Yattu-Atuan, in which the soul that had taken flight finds its happiness in rest and solitude. The second heaven is Firdeos, or the paradise of the gourmet. In it aare found united all things good to eat. Itis a restaurant where the service is perfect, the cooks artists, the viands the best the market af- fords and the appetite eternal. The third heaven is Nalm. This is = sort of quintessence of Firdeos. It as also a restraurant, but the food is ssublimated; itis not the meat of searth, but the ambrosia of the gods. And the appetite to enjoy it is pre- ssumably the appetite of an infinite The fourth heaven is Naua, where the water flows forever and takes on whatever flavor the drinker may de- ssire. Very sober in this life are the Seta islanders, and it may be that they hope to obtain in the world to come compensation for their mortal abstemiousness in the form of eter- nal inebriation. The fifth heaven is Ainum-Naim, the true paradise of the plutocrat. It is the receptacle of ali riches. In the sixth heaven. Salsabila, the happy soul drinks the accommodat- ang water Naua, but out of vases of purest gold. And the seventh heaven is an ex- saggerated Ainum-Naim, where every- thing is bubbling over with pearis and diamonds. So much for the seven heavens, the mature of which shows the material tendency of the Moro’s mind and il- Bustrates how far it has drifted from the teachings of Mahomet. Now for the seven hells: to prosecute his wretched}and team, and that that.—Oscar Ostrom, 45 Warran av- enue, Chicago, Il. Repudiates His Confession. Fort Scott, Kan., Jan. 6.—Amos Phillips has repudiated his confession in the Edlinger murder, and the pros- ecution, thus robbed of its chief wit- ness, is likely to have trouble in se- euring the conviction of the men in volved. Phillips, who was arrested near Butler, Mo., confessed that Ed and George Silbee, formerly of Kan- sas City, killed Edlinger for his money he helped to throw the body into Mlll creek. Now he declares that this confes sion was false; that it was forced from him by threats and under prom- ise of speedy release. He says he can prove acomplete alibi. The Silbee brothers were arrested in Cedar county, Missouri, and are now in jail he There is some circumstantial evi- dence against them, besides the con- fession of Phillips, which is now re- pudiated. Chattanooga, Tenn., Jan. 11.—Ju- lia Morrison, the St. Louis actress, who killed l’rank Leidenheimer, stage manager of Plaster of Paris Com- pany, during a performance in this city, and who was yesterday acquit- ted of murder, announces that she will go on the lecture platform and talk of the ‘ ocher side of stage life,” which she says she will point out to innocent girls perils of a stage career. She will lecture first in this city. After her acquittal yesterday Miss Morrison made a brief speech in which she thanked the judge, jury and her attorneys, and turning to Mrs. Antz, sister of Leidenheimer, who was stillin the courtroom, she said: And I will say to the bereaved sister, that God knows I would re- store her brother to her if I could.” After the trial Miss Morrison re- turned to the jail. where she received her friends and acquaintances. When her chief counsel, a man 7S years of age, came tosee her, she wept and threw herself in the old man’s arms The jurors called to see her and each of them asked for her photograph, which she promised.
