Decatur, Ala., Sept. 1.—Chazsles Logwood, revenue officer of Lime atone county, near Athen, Alabama, yesterday morning shot and killed a negro who was standing over young Logwoed’s sleeping father with an ax raised in the act of splitting the old man’s skull. This killing grew eut of two recent attempts made to poison the entire Logwood family. The negro killed had been arrested, charged with implication in the poisoning, but escaped from jail, first having sworn to kill the Logwood family Since then young Logwood has been sleeping in the daytime, guarding the family at night. At 4 o'clock yesterday morning he was lying awake in a dark room uad- joining his mother’s and father's Hearing a slight noise he slipped to the door and was horrified to fiod the negro, Ike Weils, standing over his father ready to strike There was also another negro in the room Logweod tired at close quarters, mortally wounding the negro with ax in hard The negroes jumped out of the back door and started to climb the fence. Logwood tired again, wound- ing the second negro, but he escaped. The first negro shot was hanging over the fence, not quite dead. Young Logwood reloaded his gun and finished his man, firing both barrels into him. Charles Logwood gave himself up and was acquitted before 7 a. m. Great excitement prevails in the country and serious trouble is likely to follow. The people there believe that certain well known moonshi haye instigated all the crime they are said to have sworn away the lives of both the Logwoods.
