Most of the in the hamlet are ina more or less | dilapidated condition Burglars at | tempted to crack a safe there a few | nights ago with disastrous resulte. | August 10 Hanson & Graham got jin a 20-pound package of dynamite} Ga they concealed behind the ir| |safe as the safest place in their store. A few days later they made collections amouuting to nearly $4,000. As there was not time to bank it, the money was locked in the safe forthe night. In some way the fact of its presence leaked out, and about 2a. m. burglars visited the store in search of the cash. There was no way to get it but by blowing open the safe, aud this was accordingly the plan adopted. The dynamite and the powder in the safe door went off almost simul- taneously. What became of the burglars can only be conjectured. The store was blown to fragmente, the safe scattered over half an acre cf ground and the thieves are alto- gether missing. One of their num- ber was stationed outside, however, to guard against interruption. He other buildings | All were wan and emaciated, and were afflicted with malaria, chills and camp fever. Those that were able, while the train stayed half an bour, got out of their cramped quarters and strolled around the station. All tell stories of the horrible con- ditions at the camp they had left, and heartily condemn the action of the authorities in maintaining a camp under such unfavorable condi- tions. The hospital train was in charge of Rev. G. H. Ottman, chaplain of the regiment, and Edward Churchill hospital steward. The train pulled out at 8:15 p m. for Sedalia, Ne vada, Springfield, Jefferson City, Joplin and Carthage. Everybody,Says So. Mr. Rosewater received assurances from the war and navy departme that a number of distinguished cers would be detached from active service and detailed to make the army and navy day during jubilee week impressive.
