Joplin, Mo, March 16—An ex- citing incident cecurred at the Club this eveuing during a hypnotic ex- hibition. With twelve Joplin young men on the stage in a hypnotic state, the hypnotist suggested to them that they were Spaniards and pointing toa portion of the audience standing in the rear of the theatre suggested those people were Span- iards. The order to charge was given. The hypnotist intended to halt his subjects before they could leave the Btage, but so intent were they on fighting that half of them, led by standard bearer, carrying the stars and stripes, rushed off the atage be- fore they could be controlled, and charging down the aisle, attacked those whom they believed to ba Spaniards aod fought them desper- ately with brooms which they had been drilling. The standard bearer broke his flag over one man’s head, and several persons in the audience got hard knocks. The bypnotist rushed after his subjects, snapping h’s fiagers and trying to bring them “right” but it was some time before the pan ic could be subdued. The hypnotist, after getting his war-like subjects right, stated that persons ina hypnotic condition fol low tkeir natural impulses and that this incident showed the trus feel- ing, and intent of ths American peo- ple concerning the Spaniards. No Reason to Fear Spaniards, Clinton, Mo, March 16.—Harry Williams, a seaman on the Moat- gomery, writes from Havana: “The Vizeaya and Oquendo do net begin torank with tbe Brooklyn and her class. We have nothing to fear from Spain’s navy. They are teo slow and far behind the times. There is no danger of us getting blown up. We arrived yesterday and as soon as | it got dark last night we made sure there were no mines or torpedoes | under us. We are good for ten times | our number of Spaniards if Uncle| Sam will only give us a chance.” | hospital, this died almcst instantly. The murderer escaped and posses jwere at once organized and have been scouring the neighboring coun- try all day in search of him He will be lynched if captured. Leonard was an exceedingly populer man and the citizens are determined that the | murder shall be avenged. At 3 o'clock this morning Marshal Leonard was notified that a resi dence in north Cameron had been robbed. He at once proceeded to the Junction depot, a mile distant from the heart of the town. Here M./be arrested a suspicious looking negro and took him into the waiting room to search him Among ether things found was a bottle of brandy which bad been taken from the house that he had robbed. Before the work of searching the negro had been completed, the door of the waiting room opened and two -|other strange negroes entered As they came into the room, the mar- shal looked up and while he was momentarily off his guard the bur- glar wrested the officer's revolver from his hand, turned upon him and shot him twice. Leonard fell to the floor and expired in a few second, while all three of the negroes bur- ried out of the building aud disap- peared in the darkness. Marshal Leonard was years of age. He had a several children. Lawson, Mo, March 16.—Officers from Plattsburg arrived here this evening in search of the negro who murdered Marshal Leonard, of Cam- eron last night. As they alighted from the Santa Fe train the negro was seen to board the front end of the baggage car. They started for him, but he jumped from the car and disappeared in the direction of some negro cabins ia the southwest part of town. Four shots were fired at him and it is thought he was wound- ed. It says: “A large number of the counties of Miesouri are in fivancial distress be- cause of the heavy and ever increas- ing costs. The establishment ef the whipping post for minor offenses and chronic vielaters of the law would bring immediate relief by cutting the criminal costs in two, and we would not have to whip more than one man in a county in five years. The dread of the punish- ment and the disgrace attending its inflictien would do the rest. Some false sentimentalists maintain that this isa relic of barbarism and too horrible to contemplate, but as leng as we have the barbarians with us there is mothing so salutary as the relic. Then let us apply it, and eave the law abiding taxpayers their hard earned money.” Given Up by Four Doctors.
