Held up. | Ripon, Cal., Sept. 9.—The south- | bound express train from San Fran-| cisco to Los Angeles was stopped | here fcr 20 minutes last evening. Near Marrano, five miles from here, ties had been piled on the | track and the wood ignited The! train slowed up, and two mer, who, were hiding behind the fence on the | side of the track, fired aimlessly to ward the train. One of the charges of buckshot entered the hip of a tramp who was stealing a ride on the top of one of the care. Ties had been piled on the track in a similar manner a few nights ago. | Consequently Sheriff Cunningbam had placed two deputies on the train, one of whom was riding in the cab. As soon as the train stopped the deputy leaped from the cab and the robbers fled precipitately toward the San Joaquin River, eight or ten miles distance. Deputy Sheriffa Black and Wall could not get near enough to the robbers to open fire on them, and the track being uninjured the train proceeded to thie station, where the} deputies took a trail to try to cap ture the robbers. It is reported here that the deputies bave arrested | aman under suspicion of being a member of the gang, and took him with them by team to Stockton. The injured tramp is being treated here, and will probably recover. The patsengers on the train knew noth. ing of the trouble until the brief episode was concluded. Nervous and Irritable. This describes a condition that is common to both sexes and is the result of fmperfect di- gestion and liver disorders. The nerves are weak, the blood defictent in vitalizing and nerve nourishing properties and the excreto- organs are cicgged up with impurities The remedy is, a thorough overhauling of the body with a@ reliable system tonic. Prickly Ash Biters is especially appropriate in such disorders because of its fourfold curative ef- fect. Itetrengthens and regulates the liver, heale the kidneys, stimulates the stomach an digestion and opens the sewers of the body so that poisons and obstructions are removed through the bowels. Gives strength to the nerves, increases the vital energy, improves the appetite, and contributes that ease of mind and body enjoyed only by th in health. Sold by McClement & Co. Newport, Conn, Sept. 9 —Mrs. Daniel O'Brien, an eccentric old wo- man, was found dying this moroing in her kovel, three miles from this village. There wasa deep gash in her neck and her tongua was hanging by astrip of membrane, an effort apparently having been made to cut it out with a dull knife The woman's husband spread the news. He said burglars had tried te murder them both. The couple were reputed to be misers. Mrs. O’Brien is dying and, being illiterate, can not write her experi- ence. Without her tongue she can not talk.
