Ridgway, Mo., Aug. 18.—Free- land Cochran killed George Stran- | braugh after a desperate fight last evening five miles west of here in this (Harrison) county. Stanbraugh married Cochran’s aunt, and aceord- ing to rumor he treated her cruelly. Trouble between the two men orig inated when Cochran remonstrated with Stanbraugh. Yesterday Cochran armed himeelf with a buggy whip anda shot guo and went in search of Stanbraugh with the avowed purpose of admin- istering the same treatment that his intended victim had inflicted upon his wife. He found Stanbraugh and lashed him freely, using the gun to keep him at bay. The men finally came together and engaged in a fierce rough and tumble fight in which hotors were about even. When they finally decided to cease hostilities they shook hands and Stanbraugh asked to bcrrow a clean shirt in the place of the one he wore, which had become soiled in the me lee. Cochran volunteered to get one and went into the house. He re- turned in afew minutes with a double-barreled shotgun. He walk- ed to Stanbraugh and deliberately putting the muzzle against bis head pulled the trigger. Stanbraugh was killed instantly. Then Cochran fired the second shot into his victim's prostrate body. The murderer came to town, pur- chased a pint of whisky, drank it all apd went to bed in the house ofa friend, where the officers found him late in the night. Little Hope for Bimetailism. Fleming arrived with the strikers at Clarksburg. He furnieh- ed the men dinner. Driven to Suicide by Shame. New York, Aug. 18 —Wisthrop Gates was driven to suicide by bis shame. He took poison and was tound dying in Central Park. Gates, some years ago was pastor of the Presbyterian church in Eddington, Pa. He was very popular there and the congregation got up a purse of $500 to give him a trip through the Holy Land. Gates got only as far as Paris, and, after he had stayed there some time, he was dismissed from the presbytery. Gates began to do literary work in a smal! way in 1894. He was subject to fits of ineanity, and was confined in the Essex (N. J) county asylum for two yeers.
