John Mitchell and Jack Coffman Were Killed,—Accused ot Belonging toa Gang of Thieves—The House At- tacked and Fired Into at Mid- night—One Child Wounded Mountain Grove, Mo, May 20.— As the result of a mob's attack on the home of John Mitchell in this county,as wired The Chronicle Wed- nesday afternoon, Mitchell and Jack Coffman are dead and one of Mitch. | ell’s children is slightly wounded. The Chronicle's ccrrespoudent went to the scene of the tragedy last night, and from members of the family learned the details of the crime. About 12 o'clock Tuesday night a mob of citizens visited the home of John Mayfield, who lives ina narrow valley, eight miles from this place, looking for Liga Mayfield, John’s son, but, after passing single file through the house and not findiog Lige at home, threw their burning torches upon the roof of the house, setting the dry shingles afire. May- fied, by hard work, saved his home from the flames. The mob, thinking their work well done, then took up their march to the home of John Mitchell, who lives about one mile farther up the valley. THE MOB OPENS FIRE. Upon their arrival they aroused the inmates by pounding upon the door, but failing to get inside the house, commenced firing into the building. John Mitchell, well know- ing the intentions and purpose of the mob, got up and started across the room to get his revolver, but was mortally wounded before reach- ing it, be'ng shot through the head, arms and body. His step brother, Jack Coffman, who was in the house, aroused by the uproar of children’s screams and women crying, raised up in the bed and was literally filled with buckshot by eome one of the mob who could see his actions by the light of a torch that was being held in a small window. Dave Mitch- ell, brother of John, jumped out onto the floor, only to catch his dying brother, who fell in his arms, and was himself shot through the head and arms, and thinks his life was only saved by his brother's body being between him and the mob.
