PART OF THECITY WIPED OUT. { Cloudburst Followed by the Break of the Water-Works Supply Pipe Plays Ruin at the Metropolis of Oklahoma. Guthrie, Okla., April 28—At 6 o'clock this morning, a mighty wave of water, six feet deep anda mile wide swept down Cottonwood Valley striking this city with a tremendous roar, crushing houses and driving people screaming from their homes. At the first rush every bridge and avery boat went down the stream. Probably over 50 persons were drowned. The flood was caused by a cloudburst at a point unknown. All West Guthrie is inundated. In 20 business houses water is 10 feet deep. The river is 30 feet above its usual level, and is four feet deep on the railroad tracks, which are giving way. The telegraph is likely to fall at any moment. Hundreds of people are in trees, but can not yet be helped. Men try- wg to swim the channel to reach four women and a baby in a tree were carried away. People are floating off on houses. One woman wading from her home with her baby on her head was seen to go under. The air is hideous with she screams of dying animals. It is believed that a score or more of negroes were drowned in the col- ored settlement. There is absolutely no way of helping people, as no bridges and no boats are left. At 10 o’clock the flood was station- ary. Nine people are known to have been drowned. Two women anda ehild were carried away on a bridge. Io the southwestern pert of the sity a long arm of land is formed by the widening of the river. On this Jand lived hundreds of negroes. During the night the bridge leading across the river to the city had been swept away The people were ab- sorbed in watching the rising waters this morning when the reseryoirs suddenly burst and the added flood game down in a solid wall, cutting off the people from eecape. Three daring raftsmen sought to vescue an old man from a tree. The vaft as it rushed down the river was watched with breatkless excitement. It struck the overhanging limbs and the raftsmen were knocked off their feet. They managed to stay on the raft, however, and it went whirling toward the Cimarron. Nothing bas since been heard of the men. The tracks of the Santa Fe are submerged and traffic has been aban- doned. Small railway bridges ip all directions have been washed out. The disaster equals the. Chandler tornado for its terrible suddenness. An unknown man, his wife and child have just floated down ona house, which had toppled over and drowned them all.
