Fort Smith, Ark., April 21—A society scande! that has been brew- ing some time culminated this morn- ing inthe shooting of John T. Gil- more by Harry E. Ramey. Ramey is an insurance man, and the report is that when he came home last week he caught Gilmore at his house ata very unseemly hour. Gilmore then escaped, it is eaid, because Ramey was unarmed, but Ramey gave him notice that if he did not leave town at once he would shoot him on sight. MET ON THE STREET. Gilmore and Ramey met at Garri- son avenue and Sixth at 9 o'clock. Ramey immediately fired, hitting Gilmere in the arm and in the groin. Gilmore fell after the second shot, but raised himself to a sitting posi- tion, drew his pistol and fired three shots at Ramey, without effect. Ramey returned the fire, once from the sidewalk, and then stepped into the First National Bank, where the police took charge of him. The shooting created intense excitement. Gilmore is seriously wounded. He isa young lawyer, and came here two years ago from Virginia, where his family is one of the oldest in the State. NIECE OF AN EX-GOVERNOR Mrs. Ramey, over whom the shoot- ing occurred, is of an old Fort Smith family. Her maiden name was Maude Nathan, and she isa niece of ex Gov. Fishback. She is a handsome brunette, and is possessed of a mag- nificent contralto voice, and is well known in Galveston, Tex., where she was one of the leading choir singers. She was married to Ramey about ten years ago. Are you gloomy, depressed, despondent, with no energy or interest in life’s duties?
