UNDER GUARD Are All Trains on the Island of Cuba. NOSCONCEALMENT OF MURDER ALONG THE WAY. Man Hanged to a Tree and His Wife and Babe Lay Dead Beneath. In Pioar Del Rio Province, Cuba, April 15.—Coming into this province from Havana, I had a good oppor tunity to study the railway system and traffic of the island. Travel is expensive, for passengers have to pay in part for the military protec tion needed fcr the trains. Each train has its pilot engine, which car- ries an engineer, fireman and five soldiers. Told that the train for Pinar del Rio was ready. Ihad a chance to inspect it. First there was the p:lot engine with its guard. Attached to our train was another Iccomotive, without military escort. There were six rough cars carrying soldiers from the Havana hospitals back to camp. Then came an armored car with 50 soldiers on the lookout. A third class car was filled with mulat- toes. A second class car contained the non commissioned Spanieh of- ficers who wera on the train, The higher officers were ina first c'ass car. The train waa completed by another a) mored car with 50 soldiers part of whom were perched on the roof in the blazing sun. The patriots, under Rodriquez, were said to have destroyed a bridge abead, but our pilot engine made a| tour of discovery and returned to re- port the line safe. The fact that no trains are run at night gives the Cubans every opportunity to plant dynamite bombs and burn bridges. Just after our train passed Arte. | mica, near where it is claimed the body of Gen Maceo is buried, we came upon the ruigs of a hut, still smouldering. We left the train to make an examination. Almost at the threshold Jay a young woman, | outraged and murdered. From a! tree to the left the husband was | hanging, dead. His last sight must | ROYALTY ITSELF. work of Cubana and guerrillas. The corpses of the slain are not buried One can not wonder at disease, fever and smallpox are eo prevalent. The Spanish troops frequently can not boil the water they drink. because a campfire would attract the attention of the enemy. At Guane, which was held by the Cubans, I saw a good example of Spanish blundering. The Spaviards hoped to recapture the town, which they losta shert time ago. When troops ati.ved, however, the Gereral did not take possession of a strip of woods which commanded the Cuban fort. Such work would mean the removal of a Eurupean officer. The Spanish soldiers do not seem to be much interested in strategy cf war— a cigarrette is better Ballard’s Horehound Syrup. 4 We guarantee this to be the best cough syrup manufactured in the whole wide world, This is saying a great deal, but it is true. For consumption, coughs, Colds sore throat, sore chest, pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma, croup, whooping cough, and all disease of the throat and lungs, we positively guarantee Ballard’s Horehound Syiup to be without an equal on the whole tace of the globe. Sold by -H L Tucker, Demes “Making Love” to Her. Topeka, Kan., April 15 —Another step has been taken in the breach of promise suit of Miss Verna Stratton against John H. Rousseau. Mr Rousseau to-day filed his answer to the petition. He admits that he “went with’ Misa Stratton a long time aod made her presents, but denies that he ever “made love” to her, and as for proposing marriage to her, he never dreamed of such a thing: He quit going to see her be- cause she said her parents objected. Rousseau says. further that Miss Stratton was under age when he kept company with her, and, there fore could not legally enter into a marriage engagement. On November 17, 1896, she married John W. Sharp of that place. Mr. Gier could not indorse the doctrine of the plurality of husbands and had the woman arrested yester- day for bigamy She admitted her guilt, but said she married Gier on the distinct understanding that he was not to be considered her bus- band. When asked why she did not pro- eure a divorce from Gier before marrying Sherp, she retorted sharp- ly: “I did not care about spending $50 for a divorcee from e ...... who was not worth 25 cents.” Deafness Cannot be Cured. by local applications, as they canno reach the diseased portion of the ear There is only one way to cure deafness and that is by constitutional remedies. Chicago, Ill., April 15.—A man supposed to be Dr. Cameron of Al bany, N Y., shot and killed himself at the Imperial hotel today. He wae not dead when found in his room, but he died in the police am- bulance while being taken to the hospital. From statements the mao made, it is thought he comes from a wealthy family in Albany. The man gave indications of considerable re- finement, and his clothing was of the best material. Cameron bad been in Chicago less than a week, and had been stopping at the Audi torium Annex and the Wellington hotel. He left his bill unpaid at the latter house, and was evidently in financial straits, as seyeral pawn tickets were found in bisroom. He told the clerk of the hotel in which he killed himself that he had come to Chicago to find his wife, who had left him in Albany. He also said that he came originally from Battle Creek, Mich., and had been spending a large sum of money in fast living in New York s Stimulate the stomach, Pi f 4 ur st constipat i t Ss 1 cents.
