The impression seems to have been created in the minds of some of our people that the State Board of Equalization had raised the taxes on Bates county property ten per cent. This is an error. The assess | ment of Bates county was raised 10 per cent. Under the law there must be a fairness in the equalizing lof taxation and each county in the state must bear its just proportion In this respect if the assessors fail to do their duty in assessing real and personal property, making the county fall short of its just pro rata, then itis not only the duty, but obligatory upon the state board to adjust the assessments. The duties of the siate board are in line with the duties of the county boards of equalization, which meet once a year to equalize township as- sessments. To make each county in the state bear its equal propertion of taxes there must be some way fixed by law to get at the matter, and this is why boards of equalization and boards of appeals are created There- fore, if the board of this county has a grievance at the action of the state board for having raised the aseess- ment of this county on real and personal property, it bas its re- course before the state board of appeals, which meets later. The state board of equalization is com- posed of democrats, and if their action in raising ass-ssments was done ona political basis, they cer- tainly would not have picked out one of the strongest democratic counties in the state upon which to praetice imposition.
