Five of Them Perish in Their Home. Des Moines, Ia. March 25.—Five children of Mr. and Mre. Frank Pen- rod at Ladedale, a mining town on the Wapollo and Davis county line were burned to death last night. Three were cremated and two died a few hours later. The parents of ths children took the oldest child of the family, a son, aged 12, and a baby in the arms of its mother and went to a religious meeting, having first put the other five children to bed. The school house where the services were held was only a hundred feet away from the Penrod home. About 9 o'clock an alarm of fire was given and Pen- rod 1ushed out with the rest of the occupants of the school house to find his house in flames. It was impos- sible to enter the house, as it was crumbling when Penrod reached it. The children’s beds were by the window, however, and Penrod burst the window open and succeeded in pulling the 8 year-old and 4 year-old boys out, horribly burning himself in the act. The two never regained | consciousness and died iu a short time. The others were burned until | Jowa Maniac Goes A-Guaniog. Odebolt, Iowa, March 19.—Dave of people who had incurred his en mity. Then Pennington went to the house of Hiram Jobnscn and fired at Mrs. Johnson, seriously wounding her inthe shoulder and back. He next emptied both barrels into Luther Traver, an aged man, killing him instantly. Then he point ed the gun at Mrs Frank Stolt, a angt against | neighbor, who came to the door on hearing the noise. She rau into the doorway, closing the storm-door behind her, but he tired through the door, wounding her in the abdomen. Pennington retreated across some vacant lots, loading his gun as he called to an officer, and dared him to shoot. He exclaimed: “Well, if you haven’t got the nerve to shoot, I have.” Then he placed the muzzle of the gun to hid furehead and blew the top of bis head off, scattering brains and pieces of skull fifty feet Pennington was undoubtedly insane. It is thought that Mrs. Stolt can not recover, but Mrs. Joknson’s injuries while severe, are not fatal. Died near Yates, Mo., March 15, 1897, Mrs. Ida J., wife of S. N. Tivis. Mrs. Tivis, whose maiden name was Alexander, was born in Bates Co, Mo., April 24, 1869. She was married to Mr. Tevis Nov. 17, 1892. She .eaves three little chil- dren, the youngest being only two weeks old, wko with the husband and many relatives mourn her loss The funeral services were conducted by Eld. I. M. Turnage, at the Old Chapel burying ground Tuesday at noon. It was a sad funeral, the grief of the relatives was heartrending, and a sister that was at the bedside when Mrs. Tivis died, was so pros trated she could not be at the burial. The sympathies of the community go out to the bereaved ones. Mra. Tivis’ sickness was borne by her with great fortitude. She was con scious to the last, and spoke words of comfort and admonition to her family. She died in the triumph of the faith in Jesus Christ.
