GREW RICH By Insuring Poor Men’s Lives and Then Poisoning Them. Memphis, Tenn., March 10.—At De Kalb, Miss., there has begun the trial of Dr. W. P. Lipscomb, who, with Guy Jack, one of the foremost business men of the county, is charged with the murder of C. T. Stewart. The circumstances closely resemble the celebrated case of H. H. Holmes. The indictment charges the two men with murdering Stew- art to obtain surance on Stewart's life, aggregating $125,000, held by | Jack. A post mortem examination was made and enongh strychnine found in Stewari’s stomach to kill a herd of cattle. New Yorker Saved From Death by an Indian Hunter in Florida. Jacksonville, Fla, March 10.—A special from Fort Pierce, 100 miles below here, received here to night, says that a party consisting of J. J. Finn of New York, Charles Varney of Cincinnati, Ohio, and one or two Chicago men, bad an exciting time with a panther near that place while fishing on one of the numerous creeks there. They had placed their big strings of bass on the bank of the stream, as they were too heavy to carry with them. Mr. Finn sepa- rated from the party, and a few minutes later a big panther leaped from a thicket opposite him and be- gan feasting on his fish. Mr. Finu, not realizing bis danger, attacked the beast with a big light- wood knot. The animal snarled, showed its long teeth, and, witha growl of rage, leaped upon him. Mr. Finn was knocked down, and the sharp claws of tbe enraged animal began tearing his clothes into shreds, bringing the blood at every stroke. Billy Bowlegs, the young Seminole chief, who is well known in this sec tion, happened to be hunting near by, and hearing Mr. Finn’s cries, he rushed up, and placing his rifle near the animals head, fired, saving Mr. Finn’s life. The latter was badly injured. In token of his gratitude Mr. Finn gave Billy Bowlegs a handsome hunting outfit, comprising a repeating rifle and other adjuncts. 3 Did You Ever Try Electric Bitters as a remedy tor your troubles? C., March 6.—The Fifty-fourth congress passed the billion dollar mark of the fifty first by over $42,000,000. Apologists for this large sum may declare that the congress just ex- pired did not even reach the billion dollar’ mark, because, forsooth, Cleveland, by failing tojsign the four appropriation bills, lopped off $72,- 000,000. But that argument is a mere sub- terfuge. ‘The congress passed bills which aggregate a $40,000,000 ex- cess of a billion, and by that record the congress will be known.
