Gantt, who wae bard at work in his rooms. He always has time to greet his friends, however, and we found him the same genial gentleman as when he limped around over this district aud gave instructions to petit juries and unraveled intricate law pointe for our people. - He said he needed a vacation but he didn’t have the heart to take it while so many poor fellows with their all wrapped up io a law suit was wait- ing anxiously the action of the court. We had a very pleasant visit with Judge Barclay, who our people will remember was nominated at Spring- field over Judge DeArmond. The Judge had a very pleasant recollec tion of our delegation and comment- ed upon the loyalty they displayed to their candidate. From lawyers who have a large amount of business in his court and who are competent to judge, we learn that Judge Barclay has made an enviable record as «Supreme Judge. The general opinion, as we heard it frequently expcessed, that Bates county bas a very strong representa- tive in Mr Ellis, the peer of any man in the house. As an old member he would be the leader on the floor. He watches legislation closely and votes intellizently on every proposi- tion which comes up. Senator Ballard takes high rank in the senate. When ke addresses that body he commands the closest attention, aud bia words carry weight with them. He isthe chairman of several committeee, to one of which is referred the investigation of the Kansas City police commissioners. The resolution he introduced asking for a sub committee with full power to act shows that there will be no whitewashing. Claud Clark is chief clerk of the Adjutant General's office, at a salary of $1,500 per year. He is desery edly popular, and givis promise of a rapid promoticn to a high place in state politics. McPberson. He bas been with the Globe Democrat si: ce 1883. A fellow servants bill embracing railroad employes alone was reported favorably by the House committee last week. Hon W_ W. Graves, S. W. Dooley aud a number of Bates county miners appeared before the committee aod urged that legisla tion of this nature be extended to protect miners. While admitting the justice of these claims the committee was of the opinion that this class of legislation could be best obtained by separate bills. Hence a miners’ fel low servants bill will be introduced at an early day by Hon. George B Ellis. Mr. Ellis aud Senator Ballard, baviug a large miner constituency, are strongly in favor of a bill of this nature, and we have no doubt they will succeed in having such a law enacted. The House committee to investi gate the Kansas City chief of police, after several days session aud the taking of a larger batch of testimony. adjourned on Wednesday. The Sen- ate committee will begin its investi gation today Itis the impression of a great many that the House committee was appointed for the purpose of applying a coat of white wash. However this may be we wish to say that the democratic party can not afford to wink at and cover up fraud and corruption within the party. These gentlemen accused are presumably innocent until they are proven guilty. They should bave a fair and impartial trial before an unprejudiced committee, and let the facts be brought out, no matter what they are. The gentlemen con- ducting this committee will be held strictly to account for their steward sbip.
