The numberand variety of thieves now loose upon this section was never greater than right now. Noth ing seems to be safe from the hands of these trifling hounds, many of whom trayel through the country in wagons robbing hen roosts, barn yards, smoke houses and, in fact, appropriating anything that is port ible and of value that happens to come in their way. Sometime these thieves are fol- lowed and captured Constable Ora Wright caught a couple such recent ly in Coal township and they gota just and prompt punishment by a penitentiary sentence, for rurglary, at the present term of the circuit court. It is to be regretted that more of them are not similarly situ ated. Saturday last a couple of this class of thieves passed through this coun ty in a wagon having stolen a num ber of articles from the baros and farm houses along their route from Butler. Among others robbed was a Vernon county farmer, living near | the State Ime. He tracked the thieves to Ft. Scott where he learned they had been seen. The thieves had stolen a set of harness from him. The Bates county officers were also on their track, the same men having stolen two or three sets of harness in that county. The thieves were overhauled at Uniontown, Kan- sas, Monday night and the stolen property recovered and the thieves brought back to Missouri Electric Bitters. 1 WElectric Bitters is a medicine suited for aay season, but perhaps more gener- ally needed when the languid, exhausted teeling prevails, when the liver is torpid and sluggish and the need of a tonic and alterative istelt. A prompt use of this medicine has prevented long and perhaps tatal bilious teyers. No medi- cine will act more surely counteracting and freeing the system trom the malari- al poison. Headache, indigestion, con- stipation, dizziness yields to Electric Bitters. socand $1 per bottle at HL ‘Tucker’s drugstore. Picked Up a Fortune. The case of Cyrus Newkirk, ex- President of the defunct First Na- tional Bank of Sedalia, has been postponed until the March term of the Crimina! Court. There are four indictments against Newkirk for grand larceny. The defense set up the plea that Mr. Newkirk was in feeble health, and that a journey ' from California across the mountains would result in his death. There have been several continuances of | the trial of the officers of the wreck- led bank and the depositors are very | much exasperated. It is always too | hot or too cold for Mr. Newkirk to come back to Sedalia to stend trial |for the charges against him. And | there is Oliver K. Caldweil, of th in Colorado for two or three yeazs.
