T J.B. WA RARRRRAR How the Christmas Holiday Is Kept in That City. From the Chicago News. There is not ove person in 10,000 who knows how the Christmas holi- day is kept in Bethlehem, the city most closely connected with the day. Bethlehem of this time has 8,000 inhabitants and is not attractive in appearance, as the etreets are too narrow for vehicles. Only donkeys and camels and footpessengers trav- erse the narrow alleys. The town is but five miles south of Jerusalem. There is a splendid road between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. and the drivers take one over the ground at a furious speed. Of course the city is larger and better built than in the time of Christ, but otherwise has not changed very essentially. The great church of the nativity and some of the larger buildings are since the day of Christ, but many of the buildings doubtless stood at the time of his birth. At Christmas everyone visits the field of the Shepherds, a mile away from the church, which is reputed to te the place where the shepherds tended their flocks. Back of the big church a procession of bishope, priests and people forms in the rom wes ware. eee OO eee $110,000.00 $55,000.00 $11,000.00 Lends money on real estate on long or Have always on Persons tht ttt t+ Booker Powell, CR Radford, CH Dutcher, T C Boulware, F M Voris, W W Trigg. Boston, Mass., Dec. 16.—The last of the municipal electious in Mas- sachusetts were held yesterday. The most surprising result came in Lynn, where Walter L. Ramedell, a silver democrat was elected mayor by a majority of about 1,700. This was brought about largely by the cut-downs in the local shoe shops since the national election. Rams dell ia a newspaper man and con ducted his campaign on the silver issue. The city of Lynn, after being for no license for several years, also voted for license for the coming year. In Boston, six republicans and six demccrats are elected aldermen. The commen council is democratic by a fair majority. Ramedell, the successful candidate in Lynn, receiv ed acongratulatory telegram from from William J. Bryav, saying that the city had “at last put the shoe on the right foot.” Laxolis the best medicine for children. Doctors recommend it in place of Castor Oil. Mr. Stephens Honored. Those whe partici- pated in the reception of the guests were Capt. Leonard and wife, Gov.- elect Stephens and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander H. Stephens, Mr. and Mrs Abel Leonard, Mr. and Mrs. Paul B Moore Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur T. Johnson, all of whom are either brothers, brotbers-in-law or sisters or sisters in law of the Gov- ernor-elect. Gomez Has Crossed the Trocha. Jacksonville, Florida, Dee. 21.— Advices received here from Havana convey the startling intelligence that the insurgent army in heavy force had crossed the Jucaro Moron tro- cha. ‘There appears to be no doubt that this is the foree commanded by the commander in chicf, and that Gomez's long looked-for cffensive movement has begun in earnest. Key West, Fla, Dec 31.—Gomez is reported as advancing westward, but, being incumbered by _ his arti. lery and supplies, bis progress is slow. It is reported also that the oid Cuban General was terribly cut up over the tragic death of his be- loved son, and that be bas aworn to make the Spanish suffer forit. He believes that Maceo aud Francesco were decoyed to their death by Spanish treachery. Senator Sherman’s Opimon, Cincinnati, Ohio, Dec. 20.—The Commercial Tribune wired to Sena- tor Sherman for his viewa on the power of congress to recognize the indepensence of Cuba, and received this answer by wire: Washington, Dec. 20.—There is no foundation for the statement that congresa may not, if it will, recog- nize the independence of a new nation, nor do I think Mr. Olney contests it, but he thinks the matter ought to come from the President. If, however, Congress should pass a resolution and the President should veto it, it can be passed by a two thirds vote of each house and would become alaw which the President must respect and obey.
