Newark, O., Oct. 8.—This city to day presents the now novel spectacle ofa factory voluntarily offering to increase ite employes’ wages, the of fer being accompanied by the provi sion that the advance depends upon the election of William Jennings Bryan to the Presidency of the United States. Readers of speeches delivered by Maj. McKinley and his capitalistic friends have been taught to belieye that a Bryan victory means closed factories, idle mills and starving families. This belief has in some instances been strengthened by ertious from wavufacturers themselves. A company employing iabor exists io this community that, instead of attempting to coerce its employes or trying to induce them to vote for McKinley, is generousenough to ad- mit that under the free aud uulimit- ed coinage of silver aud gold wages will go up, not down. President Cunningham, who isa practical molder, them went on to show how molders’ wages prior to 1893 were 56 per cent higher than they are to day; how, afier silver was demonetized, there was a gradual decline until the passage of the Bland-Allison act in 1878, which re vived the West, increased the de mand for molders’ products and re sulted in increased wages. The children, grand-children and great grand-children of Addison Price decased, were gathered in a family re-union at the residence of Judge Wm M Dalton, in Butler, Saturday Oct 3d. The family was represented in full except Samuel Price, who is now a resident of Hollywood, Cal. The following families were repre- sented: W M Dalton and family; C W Price and wife, of Jamesport, Mo. Allen Price and family, of Butler; W B Pemberton and family, of Odessa; George Price and family, of Ballard; Mrs V Price, of Odessa; Mrs J Price and daughter, of Montrose; Mrs Sid- ney Graham, of Warrensburg; Mrs R F Correll, of Mapleton, Kan; Mrs B F Grider, Dennison, Tex; Mrs. George Graham, Ennis, Tex; Mrs Perry Sta- ley and family, of Burdette, A B Shelton and family, Foster; Mrs El- bridge Warford and daughter, of Ballard; Mrs R A Chenoweth and son- of Johnstown; Martin 8 Price, Holl wood, Cal; Mrs G M Tye and family, of Belton. A. B. 8. Jeint Debate At Green Valley, “The lion was scared and put to flight by the bray of ana The Green Valley school house was filled to ite utmost capacity Wednesday evening Oct 7th, with people, who were anxious to listen toa joint dis- cussion on issues which are of vital importance to the day laborer, agri- culturist and the businessman. The people of Green Valley realize that there is a never tiring spirit lurking about the living fountain of human- ity, and speaking ip whispers too full of meaning to tell. Saying never be- fore in the history of our country have the masses been bound into slavery by such gallingirons. Never before has destitution and staryation converted the pardise of so many homes intosuch howling wilderness.” The people are asking whenever be- fore were such unjust laws enacted and placed upon a peeple as now? When ever before has aristocracy ar- rayed itself against the common classes in such a contemptible man- ner? When ever before has mob and riot filled the streets of our cities and devastated the property of our vil- lages. The people of Green Valley have their eyes open. They feel the oppression and see the destitution and they are boldly and manfully asking a redress of all unjust legisia- tion and are demanding the emanci- pation of the common classes. The speakers of the evening were Messrs Winfield Steel and Seth Cope. These men have been close neighbors and good citizens of New Home township and are lo: comrades; yet their ideas are as different as discord and harmony. By agreement Mr Cope led the debate. The discussion of the evening was upon general principles. Mr Cope talked at some length upon the so-called abuse of American pa- He practically omitted the monetary question, thinking that by so doing he would give his opponent a better opportunity to raise the pending shadows by his golden bril- liancy. His talk was practical and received great applause. Mr Steel, in the course of his speech, seemed to lose sight of the all important topic of the evening, the money question, and in so doing he provoked no little disappointment. Men shun that which they hate and cleave to that which pleases them; and so did -Mr Steel when he dodged the financial prob- lem. In so doing he made a public demonstration that even he getslittle satisfaction out of the clanking chains of golden tyranny. The only rough feature of Mr Steel’s speech was his display of the sword and his fling of the bloody shirt, which sent fire into} the hearts and crimson into the faces of his hearers. He was like the lion that was scared at the bray of an ass. The sudden explosion of Mr Cope’s rough hewn eloquence made him long for the comfort of his own fireside and the company of his genial com- panion. After he had finished his speech he made a short apology and took his hasty departure. The re-/ maining part of the evening was filled | with Mr Cope’s home like eloquence on the impertant issues of the day. The crowd fared sumptuously and the speaker was frequently interrupted by loud cheering. : Cuas. SHUL ‘BERGER, Sec, “Trustee's Sale.
