Omaha, Neb, May 23.—A special to the Bee from Milliams, Io., says: A eyclone destroyed the entire town of Ellis, Hardin county, this after- noon. It is a small town and details are not yet obtained. Frank LaFollett, democratic com- mitteeman for this township requests us to say that a township conven tion will be held at the court house Saturday at 2 o'clock, p. m. to elect delegates to the county convention. From the best information we can gather Lon Stephens is the strong man for governer in this county. The bold stand taken by him early in the campaign on the money ques: tion makes him especially strong with the silver men. Jefferson City, Mo., May 22.—Jef- ferson City was thrown into a fever of excitement at 8:20 last evening by a fire alarm caused by a report that the capitol building was on fire. Lightning struck the dome, or rath- er the lantern of the dome, extin- guishing the three electric lights, but the only damage done was the crossing of the electric light wires. This resulted in an electrical display | inside the dome which made one! dome appear to bea solid mass of flame on the inside. The county Sunday school con- vention will meet in this city next Thursday. The prospects are there will be a large attendance of dele- gates. These good people, our neighbors, will have to be cared for by the citizens of this town, and for this noble cause the gates should be thrown wide open, the latch string of every door at every home in our city should hang on the outside, and the hosts of Sunday school workers should be received with open arms In the matter of caring for these delegates the well known hospitality of our citizens should be extended on every hand. There is no cause go sacred as the Sunday school and therefore, it is the duty of all to make sacrifices to aid in the good work. Make your preparations to entertain as many delegates as you can. In the adoption by the house of representatives of the clerk and sal ary grab of $100 per month, 114 republicans, 15 democrats and one silverite voted for the resolution, while 53 republicans, 49 democrats and six populists voted against it. That is the way the money of the people is being equandered by Tom Reed's “do nothing” house. This is the reported action of the house, without the assent of the senate or approval of the president. A Wash- ington correspondent states that the resolution as adopted gives a mem- ber an allowance of $100 per month, clerk orno clerk. A construc- and day Friday, Saturday and Sun- day, and a great quantity of rock, ballast, cinders and even coal was dumped against the track to protect the road bed. The overflow reached almost from Cornland to Rich dill. The levee thrown up around the Dickey farm, just south of town and which cost several thousand dollars, was almost ruined, and it is doubt- fulif the owner, Mr. Green, ever rebuild it. This farm, if pro- tected from the overflow, would be one of the most vaiuable tracts ot land in this county, as it contains several hundred acres, the soil being 10 or 15 feet deep. Trainmen tell us that the water covers the bottom from Nyhart to within a short distance of Foster. For two or three days the train ran through water for a mile or so that covered the track four inches. On Friday about half-mile of grade gave way under the track, and no trains went over the track until Tuesday. It is said that a piece of track on the Emporia above water in the bot- tom was literally covered with rab bits and snakes, and it was quitea novel sight to see them.
