PUNSION T0 HANG. Railroad Fireman Convicted of Uxorcide. | | | Shot His Witein a Hack, January 5, | St. Joseph, Mo., Feb. 5—Thomas Punsion, the condemned wife mur- confirmed yestesday by the supreme court, takes his fate with more con-| cern now than at any time since his arrest more than two years ago. There seemed to be little doubt of Puasions guilt from the first, aa though he was convicted on circum. | | stantial evidence. At the first trial he was sentenced to twenty years in prison. An ap- peal on technical grounds resulted in the supreme court granting a new trial. The jury at the first trial were decidely lenient, in the face of all the evidence, but the prisoner's lawyers thought they saw a good opportunity ef adding laurels to their reputations as criminal attor- neys, and persuaded Punsion to try an appeal. The result is Punsion will be hanged on Mareh 13. The condemned man wasa fireman onthe Santa Fe railway and had succeeded, according to witnesses in making the life of his young wife about as miserable as possible, when she picke1 up a few personal effects and returned to home of her mother. Punsion in vain tried to get her to returntohim He plead. ed, threatened and cajoled, all to no purposo. Finally on the night of January 5, 1894, he drove to the home of his mother in-law in a hack and demanded to see his wife. He was refused admittance, and, draw- ing a revolver, entered the home and grabbing his wife up in his arme, returned to the conveyance. The poor woman struggled to save her life and appealed to her younger brother to come to her rescue. He attempted to interfere when Pun- sion, with a blood curdling oath, threw a big revolver on a murderous line with the boy’s head and the latter was complled to reenter the house and that was the last seen of Mrs. Punsion alive ky her mother, brother and sisters. The hack had not driven far when a pistol shot rang out and the driver stopped He opened the door and Mrs. Punsion lay dying with a bullet through her brain. A revolver that had done the deadly work was found lying in the bottom of the hack. Punsion always maintained that his wife shot herself with his revolver which she had taken from his pocket. However his eonduct before the shot convicted him of the murder. A letter was produced in court alleged to have been written by Mrs. Punsion in which she said she intended to commit suicide and that her husband would also take his own life. th A Veteran at the time of Waterioo. Must ‘Pay Dearly tor His Kiss. St. Louis, Feb. 6—The St. Louis court of appeals to-day affirmed the judgment of $2,500 awarded Sarah M. Pierce and James E. Pierce against A. B. Carpenter, at Clayton. recently, because the latter kissed Mrs. Pierce. Upon the trial the court instructed the jury that if the assault was made wantonly, willfully and wrongfully, exemplary damages might be allowed. The evidence in behalf of Mrs. Pierce tended to show that Carpenter forcibly kissed her. The defendant moved for a new trial, because only nominal damages should have been allowed. The motion having been sustained. Mr. and Mrs. Pierce appealed, hold ing that under their pleading it was competent for them to show and for the jury to consider, for the insult- ing character of Carpenter's con- duct. The court of appeals sustains this opinion. The Writing onas Liberty, N. Y., Feb. 5. Green of Syracuse visited his sister at Turnwood last October end inci- dentally fished for trout in the brooks.
