- THEX SOMETHING And the Congregation in an Atchison Cearch was Stampeded. Atchison, Kan., Oct. 17.—Never was congregation so summarily dis-, missed and so wildly stampeded as| that at the holy temple in the hazel-} brush at the extreme limit of the city where the colored brethern meet to worship. Laet night just as the) big, strong lunged pastor had work- ed up the congregation to an excit-| ing piteh by portraying the awful fate of those who should be weighed | in the balances and found wanting there ran into the church, through the open door, a little black and white cat with a big bushy tail close- ly pursued by a big yellow dog. Cat and dog ran down the aisle tu} the platform on which the preacher | was standing. The cat was met by | the toe of the preacher's big foot, and after a brief flight through the | air it landed over among the sisters. | As it hit the floor something happen | ed. It wasa polecat. The church was quickly filled with an odor more! powerful than the sulphuric fumes of the bottomless pit the preacher had been €o recently portarying, and far more pungent and terrific. Negro men yelled, and negro women, with faces blanched, almost to whiteness, screamed and in an instant men, women and children and cat an dog were a frantic struggling mass,seek- ing any refuge other than Zion's: holy temple. They pressed to the door and as fast as they made their exit ran howling down the street greatly terrifying the people who dwell thereon. It was some time before a calm t HAPPENED. | | MARRIAGE AS A DUTY.
