Every One of the Victims Dismem- bered in Most Shoeking Manner by Powder’s Force THE EXPLOSION TERRIFIC. | Th tery © Disaster Occurs Just as the Bat Grand Army Salute. | Louisville, Ky., Sept. 11.—Just as | the members of the First Kentuc ky | artillery, a branch of the Louisville Legion of the National Guards, were about to fire the early morning sa-| lute in honor of the G. A. R. nation- | al encampment from a gun place in the center of Broadway between | Third and Yourth streets, the cais- 80n exploded. Seyen of the soldiers Were instantly killed, two of them | being blown clear over adjacent | houses. Two others were wound- ed, one probably fatally. The two horses attached to the cannon were terribly mangled and buildings in the vicinity were damaged. Was Preparing to FIVE YOUNG MEN KILLED. The men who were killed fall but one of whom belonged to the best of families in the city, are: Corporal Albert Robinson. Private Charles Biechner. Private Charles Woods. Private Albert McBride. Driver William Adams, colored. Private Fred Cohn, one of the in- jured, will probably die, the whole left side of his face having been blown off. Private William Hobbs escaped with bad burns and bruises. The place where the accident oc- cured is one of the finest residence districts in the city. Fortunately, few people were on the streets, owing to the early hour. Every window in the block was blown out. Nearly every one in the neighbor- hood was asleep, and the noise and concussion caused by the explosion almost created a panic. Half-clad men and women came running from their homes, anda most horrible sight met their eyes BODIES TORN TO FR The body of the colored mangled almost beyond recognition, fell on the front porch of a residence fully 300 feet from the place where the explosion occurred. Just outside the fence, the sidewalk was the body of Private Woods. Bits of flesh and pieces of bloody uniform were scattered all along the street, clinging to the tree tops and in the shattered win- dows. A leg and half a coat were found on Third street, one block south of where the explosion took place. They must have been blown clear over a three story and a tena ment house. Several mangled legs and arms were found on the tops of adjacent houses. Private Hutchine, at first reported annihilated, reported safe later. A hook and ladder truck of the city fire department was called and with the ladders every housetop in the vicinity was searched in vain for the missing body. On nearly every housetop were found portions of the bodies of the unfortunate young men. The body of Beichner was so bad- ly mangled that it was almost im- possible to gather it up without a shovel. It was found at the inter- section of Broadway and Fourth streets, almost a block away. The battery was on its way to Phoenix hill for the purpose of fir- ing a salute of forty-four guns. There were sixty-six pounds of pow- der in the caisson. THE EXPLOSIONS FORCE TERRIFIC Richard Cogan, who was about two blocks from the caisson when it blew up, said the noise it made was terrific. The concussion was 80 great that the buildings even at that distance were shaken and in several of the houses around him windows were shattered.
