At! the same time there is a general belief that it would not be wise to commit the party at this time to any | expression ypon the financial situa- | tion. We have no election in the; State thie year, and there is no! yeason why we should be hasty in | our action. In fact, I understand | that of the fifteen members of the State Democratic central committee only two are in favor of holding a State convention to take action on the currency question. One of these | is against it personally, but will be guided by the wishes of his con-/ stituents.” “Do you believe that such a con-! vention will be held?” | “I do not. If the State committee | does not call it there is no way in which it can assemble unless the people of the State take the matter | into their own hands, and by hold- ing tounty conyentions, select dele- gates to a State convention to be called by newly-chosen State com- mitteemen. This is a succession of | events which I do not regard as probable. One of the causes that will operate against such a spon- | taneous but irregular action is the fact that there will be ten or fifteen | ‘candidates for eyery State office at | the next convention next year, and each one of the aspirants does not | want his county or his party com- | mitted now to a position which may be embarassing a year hence. We must proceed with considerable consideration in Missouri.. We must not, in view of our experience last year, run any unnecessary risks. | Above all things, there must be no disorganization in the party, and disorganization would be threatened by any action now upon the silver question. We are certain to have | good crops. Our corn and wheat both promise an abundant harvest, | and when we have gathered and sold our products we can take a day or two off and talk over the financial | question.” “What is the Presidential talk in Missouri?” “There is some sporadic gossip, but nothing definite. It would not be even safe to predict whether Missouri will send a delegation pledged to a free coinage candidate. Morrison is very highly regarded, and I believe he could carry the State. Personally, I would like to see the Republicans nominate Me- Kinley and we put up William L Wilson. That would make a great | tight along straight lines, and I am willing to right now that McKinley would ‘not win. wager Removal. Srvci Played With Powder. Louisville, Ky., May 12 —A spec- ial from Salyersville, Ky., says a pit iful accident occurred near there Friday afternoon, in which one and probably two iives will be sacrificed. Two children of Wesley Row tried to start a fire by pouring powder out of a horn containing a pound} and a half on a small coal fire, when the powder in the horn ignited and exploded, tearing one arm entirely off the girl, 16 years old, and burn- ing ber hair and clothing entirely off A brother, a boy of 6, was standing near and parts of the horn struck him in the face knocking out both eyes and burning off all his clothing and hair. He may recover. Shot in a Box Car. Fort Scott, Kan, May 15.—R. B. Luther of,Kansas City,a commercial ;agent for the Santa Fe railroad, while out hunting at Ash Grove,Mo, car on the Memphis road.
