Halstead, Kan., May -About 4:30 yesterday afternoon a fearful eyclone devasted a strip of country several hundreds yards wide and at least sixteen mile 1 i 9 killing six persons outright and seriously injuring several others, while many have received slight injuries. cyclone struck the Fry, a widow, who liyed about nine miles southwest of Halstead, com pletedly destroying it aud slightly injuring Mrs. Fry. { up the house of John Sct catterd it in every direct » two- story house oi which had but rec at cost of over wa utirely swept away, Mrs. Joseph Weir, Grace Weir, aged 11, Herman Weir, aged 5, aud 5- Mr. Weir left the house and when the cyclone struck was about fifty yards away and clung toa tree. He was injured and the physicians says he will die. sister Maud Weir, the only ones in the family who took to the cellar, escaped with only slight bruises. The home of E. ©. Caldwell, which was 100 yards to the west of the Wier home was unroofed and the south side torn away. The family escaped by taking to the cellar. The next house in the path of the storm William which was completely wiped from the face of the earth and Mr. Arm- strong was killed, Mrs. Armstrong seriously and perhaps fatally injur- ed, Grandma Chapin, who was there sick in bed, was killed. About 100 yards east of the Armstrong house the large two story residence of B. E. Frizzell was picked up, as was also a large two story house of J. F. Frizzell across the road, and both together with all the out buildings were completely swept away, leaving enough debris to show that a house had stood there. The families of both the Frizzells escaped injury with the exception of Mrs. J. F. Frizzell, who was considerably bruis- ed about the head. The next place visited was the home of Capt. William White, which was only partly destroyed, one wing of the house being torn away. Across the rcad from White's the home of Cyrus Hinkston was entire- ly carried away and Mr. Hinkston received injuries but not considered serious. in the line of the tornado and was carried away as were the homes of A. S. Powell, J. A. Comas, Andrew Thompson and Menno Hege. Miss Daisy Neff at Powell's house was injured as was Mrs. J. A. Comas. In the Hege district school, school had just been dismissed, and through Mr. Hege’s foresight the children hurried out of the path of the storm along with his family. Had they not been so taken care of there would have been great loss of life. The fury of the storm seems to have been worse about five miles west of Halstead, where all six persons were killed near the Frizzel home. Dead horses, cattle ind hogs and chickens are seattered all over the wheat field. Those who first coming say it made very slow pro- gress, trayeling not faster than a of house of a 2.000, 1S s-old baby. was Armstrong's Spencer Ross’ house was were saw the storm person could run, bat it seemed to} waver first in one direction and then in another.
