The speaker never attempts dicta tion. He was not built fora dictator and «ven if he was, the would uot submit to it In a quick retort to Boutelle the other day, Crisp gave expression to a sentence which, in condensed form, iells the distinguishing characteris- tics of the republican and democratic sides of the house. Crisp had gone on the floor of the house to uuravel one of the many tangles which have arisen in the attempt to securea quorum in the Joy O'Neill contest. He was scoring Reed for his obstruc tion, and in a contemptuous tone referred to the serviie manner in which the republicans followed him whether they believed in his policy or not. : Boutelle, who is as short on good manners as he is long on buncombe, wus on his feet yelling and wildly throwing Ins arms about. Finally he wis heard to say: “What you need over on that side is a leader.” Crisp came back at him without a mement’s delay. “What this eide possesses,” he said, “and what that side lacks is independence of thought.” democrats COLORING BUTTER. William Chapin, of Washington county Vt., writes was follow in the Homestead: “Much is said in farmers’ meetings about the wastes of the dairy, but nobody seems to get the idea that artificial coloring in butter is a great and ip most cases an unneccessary waste. Just as good yellow colored butter can be our made in January as in June with the right kind of cows and the right kind of feed and management. April 3.—Word haying been received that two white men and five Indians had been killed in a fight in Cheyenne county, one troop of cavalry and a company of infantry have left Fort Reno for the scene. Other troops are held in readiness. The trouble was over the grazing of cattle belonging to the white stockmen on Indian lands. Since the opening of the Cheyenne and Arapahoe lands to settlement, it has been the custom of stvckmen to graze their cattle where they chose in defiance of any expressed wish of the Indians. Bad feeling was engen dered and further augmented when the Indians at intervals slaughtered cattle separated from the berd. Yesterday the red men tried their old tactics and the cattlemen, catch ing them in the act fired on the ma- rauders. When the battle ended seven men lay dead. COMING! <= Dockery Commission Reforms.
