The population at that time was 6918, including those who fled from tke tity to escape the disease. Other river towns were subsequently visited by the terrible scourge. The disease reappeared in | St. Louis in 1934 and 1849. Bollinger county was named in honar of George Bollinger of Cape Girardeau county who was quite a prominent man in the history of | Missouri. The first state capitol building accupied the present site of the goy- | ernors mansion. It was destroyed | by fire on the night of November 17 | 1837. But little was saved from the | building. It was a brick building and had cost $25,006. The first legislature to meet in Jefferson City was that of 152. Numerically it was the fourth gene- | ral assembly. | Gen.
