Spokane, Wash., May 25.—The most fabulous gold strike ever made in the Northwest was reported today from the Grand Summit mine, on Palmer Mountains, in the Okanogan mining district this state. Almost a solid body of pure gold was found at a depth of 300 feet. A seven-pound piece of ore assayed produced two pounds of pure gold which is equal in value to $175,000 to the ton. There is plenty of the same in sight. The news of the strike created in tense excitement. and a rush is being made for the district. The owners of the mine have placed a strong guard to protect the property. and men armed with Winchesters stand around the mine and everybody is warned offunder penalty of being shot. He considers the newspapers one of the secrets of success. He puts all bis money at first into newspaper ad- vertising. He started off by adver- tising real estate in religivus papers, spending at first $100 a month and increasing until he was spending $500 a month in this way. Then he tried the big Eastern dailies, and one Sunday he spent $10,000, all that he; had at that time, in putting two- page ads in the big Sunday uews- papers of New York, Boston and Philadelphia. The result was that Tammany were present. Mr. Fennell made a speech, which he attacked the Tammany leaders and denounced the work of Tammany representatives at Albany and in New York city. A number of other speeches were made and a set of resolutions was adopted de- nouncing methods and appointing a committee to perfect in Tammany Athens, May 24—The town of Thebes was shaken by an earth- quake again today.
