Tiwes.—I notice in your last issue an editorial in reply to Hon. John B. Newberry’s notions of town ship organization, and think it mght not be out of the way to offer a few | thoughts on the subject. First it is my experience that the jnearer the peoples’ business can be brought to the people the better it is for them. Iam a believer in the ability of the people to transact their own business more satisfactory to themselves than it can be done by any one person not acquainted with the immediate wants of a par- ticular locality. As for it being best for the assessment aud collection to be done by county officers instead of so many different onee, I will have to differ with you for the rea- son that it is hext to impossible for a strauger to come into a township and make a clean assessment. He jmay canvass the township, visit is done, and I will venture the as township all over the county that pay from one to ten dollars tax | whose names would not appear on | the assessment book, thereby loos ing half revenue enough to pay for the work. Theseare facts that have come under my observation. Now for the collection, there is a class of portable tax payers that change their residence often and get beyond the reach of the collector, and with atownship collector, hav- ing a personal acquaintance with all, ihe is likely to know of the contem- | plated change and secure the tax be- | fore it gets beyond his reach.
