Been the Fate ot Miss Noe). | Joplin, Mo., Dec. 20.—A case of suspected murder has developed near Noel, in McDonald county. The victim is Miss Louie Noel, 19} years old, daughter of T. W. Noel, assessor of McDonald county. Wn. Simmons, an employe at one of the Joplin smelters is supposed to be the person who can throw some light upon the case. - On the 7th inst he went to Me- Donald county to visit Miss Noel at the home of her sister, Mrs. Sidney Holly. On the following Friday he announced that he would return to Joplin that evening, and Mr. and Mrs. Holly left home to be absent until the next day. It was arranged that Miss Noel should remain at her sister's home until Simmons left and then go to the home of her uncle John W. Noe), on the other side o! the Cowskin river, or else to the house of a neighbor near by. Whe1 Mr. and Mrs. Holly returned home they found the girl away, but gave the fact no thought, as it had been arranged, until the following Wed- nesday, when they learned that she! was not at her uncle's and had not been seen there. Mr. Holly was dispatched to Webb City to inquire for her among rela- tives there, and not finding her; came to Joplin to see Mr. Simmons. Simmons said that he had left the girl sitting on the river bank and expressed surprise at her disappear- ance, but manifested not disposition to engage in the search for her. A suggestion from him that she might have committed suicide, aroused the | suspicion against hita, and upon Mr. | Holly’s return home the river was | dragged. The body was »: t found until last Saturday and then it was | discovered close to the bank, the! : clothing having caught on the over- | hanging limbs of a tree. \ An examination discloses the fact that her neck was broken and that | there were discolorations upon the | neck and bruises upon the forehead. Miss Noel had many admirers here. | She was a girl of a somewhat daring and willful disposition and it is sup- | posed that Simmons killed her in a fit of jealous rage. He was found and arrested last night but refuses to talk about the case. —~ Raum Scared Them. A stnking example of the desper- ate measures resorted to by this ad- ministration to conceal its extrava- gance until it is fairly out of office is given by the terrific slash made in Raum’s original pension estimates. Twenty <1 lions were chopped off at one swoop. In his original estimates Raum called for $185,000,000 with which to pay peusion claims during the coming tiscal year This immense sum staggered the government. It was decided that Raum’s figures must be cut down. Several men who were familiar with the workings of the pension department were ask- ed to look over these figures and suggest opportunities for reduction. Raum insisted that the amount de- manded by him was nota bit too great to pay tke demands which would be made upon the govern- ment. In computing it he had sim ply followed precedent. Away cut of this awkward hole w -ti iy discov red by Assistant Secretary Cyrus Bussey of the inte- rior department. He suggested that the expenses of the last four months would be the safest figures upon which to base estimates for the next eight months. By this jugglery Raum’s estimates were r- duced to $160,000,000. The plan pleased the administration immense- ly as part and parcel of a general scheme for muking an impending deficit to appear to be a surplus un- til it has left office. Raum protest- ed and the matter was finally brought before the cabinent ata special meeting. The result of this was that Raum was shut off with $165,000,000, which are the figures given in his official report.—N. Y. World.
