BROYLES SURPRISED. | t The Jury Gave Him Twelve Months im | Jail and a Fine of $1,000. The most important case before 1 our circuit court last week was the | state against Jas. Broyles. The trial began Wednesday morning and | closed Friday evening. The jury af- | ter spending the night in consul. | tation returned a verdict Satur-| day morning assessing his punish | ment at twelve months iu the county | jail and a $1,000 fine. | The charge against Broyles was seduction of Dollie Hemel! under promise of marriage. The crime wea alleged to have been committed in August, 1891, and while the girl was yet under the age of 18 years. On Easter Sunday, April 17th, 1892,she gave birth to a boy baby which is still living and was placed on exhi bition during the trial. The Hemell girl lives with her pa rents on the banks of the Miami rive er near the iron bridge west of this city and at the time of the alleged intimacy her betrayer lived on the Fieming farm about one mile east of the Hemell home. Broyles is a wid- ower 53 years of age ard has a famis ly of seven children. The verdict of the jury surprize! both Broyles and his attorneys, Messers W. O. Jackson and S. P. Francisco, as they expected an ac quittal. A motion for a new trial will be made and if overruled then the case will go to the Kansas City eourt of appeals. Miss Hemell is not a bad looking young lady and while ch3is wanting inthe advantages of an education, made a good witness and to'd the story of her betrayal in a plain and simple manner. Broyles made a strong defence and did not lack for evidence to prove a good character both before and after the charge bud been made against him. The prosecution was conducted by Atkeson, Bosley & Herp. For Sare.—A white sewing ma- chine, good as new. Enquire at this office. 41 td.
