| \ eT eanes Sint oe A BOLD ROBBERY. Express and Mail Car Rifled in Three Men Get $1,700 From a Spear,| from the Nation. Three Minutes. The Scene in Alabama. Birmingham, Ala, Nov. 1..—Full details of the train robbery which occurred the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia road just south of Piedmont, Ala., at iidnigh 1: night were received here to day. As the south bound express was pulling out of Piedmont two masked men quietly the forward platform of the baggage car next to the engine. Two miles down the road, at Patona water tank, and when the train was under full head- way, they entered the baggage car | and the baggagemaster with pistols, compelling him to lead them into the express car. Messen- ger Rogers had heard them coming, | and, growing apprehensive, drew his pistol, but the robber began firing into the top of the car and Rogers was forced to give up. AT THE MUZZLES OF REVOLVERS At the muzzles of pistols they compelled him to open the safe, emptying the contents of it intoa bag. The express company says the robbers only got $800. The rob- bers then marched Rogers and the on boarded covered baggagemaster into the mail car and made the postal clerk throw up his hands. The registered pouches} were cut open and their contents emptied into a bag. The robbers pulled the bell cord as the train neared Dompman’s Sta tion, and as the train slowed up they backed out the door and stepped off. Engineer Green and Conductor Jones became acquainted with the situation about this time and began firing at the robbers, who returned the fire as they fled through the woods. They raounted horses and escaped. The amount of money that the registered packages contained is not known, but is estimated anywhere from $100 to $2,000. Two hours later a posse was on the trail of the robbers and at day- light came up with them 20 miles} away in the mountains. fight ensued but so far as was known no one was hurt. The government and the express company detectives | have been sent to keep up the pui-| suit. The robbers are believed to} be the same parties who held up the East Tennessee train Ga, two months ago. Another story told by the train men is that the robbers pulled tie bell cord just after the trai left the tank, and when the train slowed up| at a little station called Dompmans | they appeared in the express car and made the messenger deliver They then went into the mail car and got a lot of valuable packages. | The whole thing was done in three | A running near Rome, minutes.
