How a Poor Litthe German Boy Feil Into a Villain’s Hands. “This boy goes to the Kansas City | ~ Humane society, Kansas City, Mo. Cnductors please see that he reaches hjs destination. Illinois Humane Society. Thus read a card attached to the coat of a queer looking little Ger- man lad, who pith bulging eyes got off a Reck Island train in the union depot yesterday to be at once cap- tured by Humane Officer Paul Mar- ran, Johann Lanuske is the name of the lad who had on a flat topped cap, a little tailed coat with big but- tons on it, baggy trousers and pro- ligous shoes. He had come from Dil leuberg, Germany, to meet his fath- er, George Lanske, who works the Armour packing house. It took some of Officer Marran’s | best diplomacy to get Johann safely into Kausas City. There is a villain in this story, a Chicago villain, a basely mercenary villain. About seven years ago George Lanske left his native land to see what he could do in America. George had only money enough to pay steer age tare for one, so he left his wife and five babies in the village and came across the ocean all alone. He came to Kansas City and went right to work in the Armour packing house. George prospered like most good Teutons who come to America, work hard and fight shy of anarchy. Ina short time he was able to send for his wife and one b.by. Then ina few years he imported two more young Lanskes. This left Johann, who was only four months old when | his father went away, all by himself. But he was given good care by his grandmother. Johann waxed fat and rosy after the fashion of Gei- man youngsters, and got to be quite a big boy. Enter yillain. A certain John Stein, representing himself to be from 262 Claybourne avenue, Chica- go, appeared in the village of Dillen- berg and much amazed the simple | villagers with the elegance of his American ways. John Stein had emigrated from Dillenberg years be- fore and had come back to visit his | old home. He visited the home of Johann Lanske’s grandmother, and to the delight of the old woman of- fered to carry the boy as far into! America as Chicago with him and put him on a train that would carry him straight to his father. The giandmother wrote to George Lanske | about this and the father at once sent money enough to pay Johann’s | passage clear through to Kansas City and leaye $5 for pocket money. John Si New York on Tuesday of last week. Straightway there came to George Lanske a telegram demanding that $20 be sent to Stem who said he was out of money. Lanske unsus- | pectin g and anxious to see his boy telegraphed that amount. there came from Stein in Chicago a Yemand for $30 more. The hard working Lauske could not manage to raise so much money, so he sent by wire $20. The money was re turned. There must be sent 830, said Stein, or he would keep the boy. Poor Lanske was wild; he saw that the man Stein meant to hold his boy for hostage until every cent he could secure bad been wrung from him. He felt every bit as bad as if he had been a great banker and all the pa- pers had been full of the stealing of his child.
